Be it known that we, VILLIAM M. CHAM- BERLAIN, of She'flield, county of Colbert, State of Alabama, HAROLD B. SMITH, of Barre, county of lVorcester, State of Massachusetts, an d ROBERT L. WARNER, of Portland, county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VehiclelVrenches; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to vehicle-wrenches, and particularly to that class known as hubwrenches, being adapted to remove or replace an axle-nut by revolving the wheel.
As will hereinafter appear, the device is strong, durable, readily applied, and effective in its operation.
The invention will be fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure l represents a plan view of our invention applied te the hub of a wheel; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section on the line Qc fr of Fig. l; Fig. 3, an end view of same, and Fig. t detail views showing one bolt in perspective and a plan view of a plate for covering the bolts.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates the body or handle of a wrench, which is preferably cast of malleable iron and provided with the usual rectangular or square recess or nut-box B, for engaging with the nut.
Across the upper surface of the Wrench, at right angles to its length and directly above said recess B, are formed channels o of a combined width about equal to that et' said recess, and the center of the intervening portion b is tapped by an internal screw for the reception of a bolt used to secure the several parts together, as will hereinafter appear.
The handle A is provided at about its longitudinal center with projections O C, on which is formed rack D, extending across the surface of the handle in an arc of a circle having its center in the middle of the head of the wrench.
E represents dogs orbolts of castor wrought metal, which serve to secure the wrench within the hub-band of a wheel when in use, and are provided with right-angled downward pro jections c, the outer ends thereof being curved to correspond with the configuration of said band, while the two members are connected beneath by an an gle-iron d, cast integral therewith or otherwise secured,and the uppersurface is provided with a groove e, which assists in the operation of throwing the bolt when desired. These bolts E, two in number, are placed in position in the channels a, with the ends or projections c thereof protruding, as shown in Fig. 3, and covered by a plate F, which has a bearing in recesses ff in the head of the wrench, thus spanning and protecting the bolt mechanism.
G indicates a lever stamped from sheetsteel, drop-forged or otherwise made, fulcrumed upon the connecting-bolt at the head of the wrench, and at its opposite end having flanges H I stamped np and down7 respectively, the former affording a ready means of moving the lever by the thu mb of an operator and the latter a tooth for engaging a rack D, and thus locking the lever in any desired position, aided by the spring in the body thereof.
On the under side of lever G and on either side of its fulcrum are pintles g, which, projecting downward, pass through elongated slots 7L in plate F and engage grooves e in the surface of bolts E, thus preventing them from slipping out of the channels a, and also affording a means of operating same through the medium of the lever.
J represents a double-headed bolt securing the parts together by passing first through lever Gr, then plate F, and finally the body portion h of the wrench, in which position it is secured by a nut i below. Plate F is also provided with apertures for admitting eil or other lubricant to the bolt mechanism, as at 7e.
The construction and arrangement of parts being substantially as described, the operation is as follows: The handle Ais grasped as if an ordinary wrench and the recess B placed over the nut to be removed, which may then be started, if so desired, by hand, in order to ICO relieve the wheel of unnecessary strain in the process of removing the nut. By the thumb of the operator lever G is now forced into the position shown in Fig. l, or any intermediate position on rack D, according to the diameter of the hub-band. rlhis movement has the cffectof applying the wrench lby throwing` the bolts and locking them in frictional contact with the inner circumference of the hub-band through the medium of lever G and pintles or projections g operating through slots h in plate F upon the sides of grooves e in the bolts, in which position the wrench will revolve with the Wheel when the latter is spun, relnoving the nut and retaining it in position to be replaced by reversing the operation, after the axle has been properly greased, without liability of soiling the hands or danger of dropping the nut and then replacing it together with more or less dirt or sand to cut the bearings when the vehicle is used.
The invention may be applied to differentsized wrenches or wrenches may be provided with adjustable jaws without departing from the spirit of ourinvention; or a lining for the nut-box B may be drop-forged and tapped by a screw-thread at its upper center to receive the end of screw-bolt J in place of the nut '13, which would, obviously, reduce the internal dimensions oi' the nut-box, and by providing several linings of this description having walls of a different thickness the wrench could easily be made to accommodate any-sized nut.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we `claim isl. Avehicle-Wrench consisting of a body provided with a dog or bolt for securing the same within the hub-band of a wheel, a lever for operating said bolt, a transverse rack for retaining the lever in position, and a nut-box, in combination with the hub of a wheel, substantially as described.
2. A vehicle-wrench consisting of a body provided with lateral projections, a bolt for securing the device within the hub-band of a wheel, a spring-lever for operating said bolt, provided with an upward-extending flange and a downward-extending tooth, t-he latter engaging a rack and retaining the lever in position, and a nut-box, in combination with the hub of a wheel, substantially as described.
3. A vehicle-wrench consisting of a body or handle provided With a lateral projection on both sides near the longitudinal center thereof, laterally-movable bolts, and channels in the head of the wrench in which the bolts operate for securing the device to the hub-band of a Wheel, a lever for throwing the bolts, a
rack for retaining the lever in position, and a nut-box, in combination with the hub of wheel, substantially as described.
4. A vehicle-wrench consisting of a body or handle provided with a lateral projection on both sides near the longitudinal center thereof, angular bolts sliding in channels in the head of the wrench and each having a slotin its upper surface for receiving pintles on the under side of a lever, whereby said bolts are operated, a rack for retaining the lever in position, and a nut-box, in combination with the hub of a wheel, substantially as described.
5. A vehicle-wrench consisting of a body or handle provided with a lateral projection on both sides near the longitudinal center thereof, angular bolts sliding in channels in the head of the wrench, each having a slot in it-s upper surface for receiving pintles on the under side of a lever whereby said bolts are operated, a plate for covering and protecting the bolt mechanism, a rack for retaining the lever in position, and a nut-box, in combination with the hub of a wheel, substantially as described.
6. A vehicle-wrench consisting of a body or handle provided with a lateral projection on both sides near the longitudinal center thereof, angular bolts sliding in channels in the head of the wrench, each having a slot in its upper surface for receiving pintles on the un der side of a lever whereby said bolts are operated, a plate for covering and protecting the bolt mechanism, provided with oil-apertures and curved slots, through which latter the pintles on the lever operate, arack for retaining the lever in position, and a nut-box, in combination with the hub of a wheel, substantially as described.
7. In a vehicle-wrench, the combination of the handle A, having lateral projections C C, angular bolts E E, provided with slots e e and sliding in channels a a, lever G, having near its fulcrumed end pintles g g and its opposite end llange ll and tooth I, rack D, coveringplate F, having oil-openings 7c, slots h, and a central aperture, and a double-headed screw J and nut i, for securing the parts together, substantially as described.
