WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
-CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 427,310,
dated May 6,1890.
Application filed January 17, 1890. Serial No. 337,262. (No model.)
dry novel arrangements and peculiar combination of parts, all of which will hereinafter be fully described in the annexed specification and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved coupler as applied to one end of a boxcar. Fig. 2 is a side view showing the two draw-heads coupled, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the coupling-pin detached. Fig. i is a detail view of a modification.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A indicates the car, which is provided with a draw-head A of the ordinary construction. In horizontal brackets to CL, extended forward from the end of the car, is held to slide vertically the coupling-bolt B, (shown in detail in Fig. 3,) and which consists of an upper portion B, held in said brackets, and a lower part B having a jointed connection at b to-the lower end of the portion B, said joint being formed by providing the lower end of the part B with a recess or fork b to receive a tongue 11 on the upper end of the part B said end being also formed into an enlargement or head 11 to limit the downward movement of said bolt B. By this construction it will be seen that the coupling-pin portion B will always be moved vertically, even should the part B be disposed at a slight angle. Between the upper bracket CL and an enlargement b on the part B is disposed a stout spiral spring 0, which normally forces said bolt downward, and to the upper end of said bolt is pivotally connected the outer end d of a foot-lever D, fulcrumed at d in bearings E E, secured to the car-top, as shown. About centrally of the part B is formed a collar or wheel 12 with the under face of which is adapted to engage the forwardly-projecting finger f of a rocking lever F, journaled to the end of the cars, said lever being extended to the sides of the car and provided with hand-holds f, as shown.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that-when it is desired to couple the cars the brakeman can by depressing the inner end 01 of the foot-lever cause the bolt to be lifted and permit the link to enter the draw-head, and when the draw-heads come together he can quickly remove his foot and permit the spring to force the bolt down in place.
ling or uncoupling can be accomplished from the sides of the car by means of the rocking lever shown.
My invention is extremely simple in construction and operation, as in case of an emergency, especially in freight-trains-such as when the engine jumps the trackthe brakeman on top of the car, by simply pressing his foot on the lever of any of the cars near the front of the train, can uncouple the major part of the train from the engine in'a moments time.
When my improvement is applied to a fiat car, I provide the draw-head with a suitablyarranged bracket and disposethe couplingpin in a manner shown in Fig. 4, the construction and operation of which will be readily understood.
To provide suitable means for automatically coupling the cars, I arrange a roller 10, mounted on a rod 20, secured at its upper end to the connection I) of the bolt B, said rod extended forward and to the side of the draw-head, as shown. Upon the opposite draw-head I ar- It will also be understood that when desired the couprange a projecting rod or bar 30, formed with Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combinatiomwith the car A, provided with horizontal brackets a a, and the drawhead A, of the vertically-movable bolt B, provided With an articulated end B an enlargement b, a collar or Wheel b the coil-spring C, disposed about said bolt between the enlargement 1) and the upper bracket a, the foot-le-' ver D, pivoted upon the top of the ear and connected to thebolt, and the rocking leVerF, provided with the projection f, adapted to engage the lower face of the collar b all arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the draw-heads A A, each provided with forWardly-projectin g members 30, having upturned ends 40, with the vertically-movable spring-actuated bolts B, provided With coupling members at their lower ends, and provided with forwardly-projecting' rods 20, adapted to engage the ends 40 of the members 30, whereby the said bolts will be automatically raised in advance of the meeting of the draw-heads, substantially as 25 and for the purpose described.
