Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
{RICHARD MAGEE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVED LETTER-PA PER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,673, dated May 10, 186i; antedated May 2, 1864.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD MAGEE, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State ofPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Article of Manufacture; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The nature of my invention consists, substantially as hereinafter described and specified, in making the fourth or last page ot'each sheet of letter or note paper opaque, or so that the matter which may be written or printed on any of the other pages thereof cannot be read through the said opaque page when the letter or note is folded in the usual manner for addressing.
To enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to understand and carry out in practice my said invention,I will proceed to the description thereof.
I take any of the opaque pigments generally used, or which may hereafter be used, in coloring the one side of paper and mix it thoroughly with thin glue or any other suitable size, and then apply one or more even coats of the compound over the surface of the fourth page of the sheet by means of a brush or other suitable tool. After the same has become thoroughly dry I usually press or calender the coated surface, so as to render it smooth and glossy, or give it an enameled appearance.
It will be readily perceived that by treating letter or note paper in the manner described the purpose specified, as a new articleofmanut'acture.
RICHARD MAGEE. Witnesses:
BENJ. MORRISON, J NO. ONEILL.
