PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,223, dated April 22, 1890.
Application filed April 19, 1889. Renewed March 8, 1890. Serial No, 343,177. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH VIRGIEN, of Yonkers, in the county of \Vestchester and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piperenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved pipewrench which can be readily adjusted for any size of pipe, and which can take hold of the pipe with a firm grip and be instantly detached from the same when the wrench is to be removed; and the invention consists of a pipe-wrench which comprises a main shank having a jaw at its end, a straight side and a rack at the opposite side, and a movable jaw, the shank of which is pivoted to a guide-frame that is guided on the main shank, said guide'frame being provided at one side with a spring-actuated handlepiece and at the other side with an interiorlytoothed section that engages the rack of the main shank. toothed section of the frame into the rack is applied to a transverse pin of the guide-frame and to the inner end of the movable jaw, and provided at its middle portion with a U- shaped bend that rests ona movable T-piece that slides along the straight side of the main shank, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in vertical longitudinal section, through the guide-frame of my improved pipe vrench. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line a m, Fig. 1.

The guide-frame C is provided at one side with extensions 0, which are connected bya transverse pin 0 and that serves as a thumb rest for moving the guide-frame C. The 0pposite part of the guide-frame O is provided with a toothed section Z), which engages the rack to when the guide-frame is not lifted away from the main shank A. The inner angular or curved end of the movable jaw 13 rests against a transverse pin (Z of the guideframe 0 and is acted upon by a spring D, fastened on the transverse pin of the guide frame C, or resting against said pin and bearing on the main shank A, as shown in Fig. 4. The middle part of the spring D is provided with a U-shaped bond that rests 011 a T- shaped movable bearing E, which is carried along with the guide-fran1e (3 when the same is moved. along the main shank A. The spring D serves to keep the toothed section b of the guide-frame in mesh with the rack a. By pressing on the thumlrrestin the inverse direction of the arrow 00, and thereby moving the guide-frame O against the tension of the spring I), the toothed section b is released from the rack a, thus permitting the guide frame C to be adjusted on the main shank A. The movable jaw B is thus moved nearer to or farther away from the end of the stationary jaw A, according to the size of the pipe to be gripped. As soon as the wrench is adjusted to the pipe the pressure on the thumb-rest of the guide-' frame is relaxed, so that the toothed section b interlocks with the rack (I of the main shank A.
In place of a stationary jaw at the end of the main shank A, the end of the main shank maybe recessed and provided with a pivoted and spring-actuated jaw A, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. This construction of the jaw on the main shank facilitates to some extent the removal of the pipe-wrench from the pipe, as the grip of the jaws is released as soon as the wrench is turned in opposite direction to the gripping direction of the same.
The pipe-wrench can be quickly and effectively applied to pipes of different sizes and can be manufactured at a comparatively low price, it being also adapted to be made on a smaller scale and used as a pocket pipe- Wrench, as shown in Fig. 4.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of a main shank provided With a jaw at the outer end and having a smooth side and a rack at the opposite side, a guide-frame embracing said main -shank and provided with a thumb-rest at one side and a toothed section at the opposite side for engaging the rack of the main shank, a 1nov-
