METHOD OF PRODUCING ,CONFIGURATIONS ON VULCANlTE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,357, dated April 8, 1890. Application iiled July 29, 1889. Serial No. 319,182. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom 1li; may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR WENDLINGER, doctor dental surgery, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a certain new and useful Method of Producingv Configurations on Vulcanite, of which the following, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact speciiication.
My invention relates more particularly to a mode of producing the name or advertisement of the manufacturer or maker of an article composed of vulcauite or hard rubber--such, for instance, as dental plates, dnd-and the invention consists, essentially, in irst forming the letters or other devices to be produced on the surface of the article of manufacture on a separate card or block of rubber, either by impressing apiece of soft rubber upon the relief-surface of printers type and vulcanizing it while thereon, so as to produce the letters 'in intaglio, which intaglio is then enibedded .face downwardv in a sheet of soft or unvulcanized rubber of a different color, of which the vulcanized article is to be produced, and the whole vulcanized, after which the surface of the whole plate is planed down until the relief portions of the intaglio are cut through, and at the saine time cutting through the rubber of the dark or different colored plate, which has found its way into the intaglio, thus producing a light card in the dark plate and dark letters in the light card; or, on the otherhand, auiptaglio of the printers type maybe made in plaster-of-paris, and this plaster mold used to produce the vulcanite letters in relief on a separate card or block. The relief-surface thus produced is then embedded face downward in the rubber plate or article of manufacture, and the whole vulcanized, after which the surface is planed down until the relief-letters belonging to the said card (produced from the plaster mold) are cut through, thus exposing th ese letters, which are of dierent color from the plate or article of manufacture and producing light (or darli, as the case may be) letters on a dark (or light, as the case ina-y be) background.
My invention will now be more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures I and II illustrate the method of producing the letters of one color on an article or plate of a dierent color, Fig. I being a section on the line I I, Fig. II, .and Fig. II being a face View of the finished plate or article after having been planed off on the line II II, Fig. I. Figs. III, IV, and V illustrate the method of producing dark letters on a light card set in the dark plate or vulcanite article, Figs. III and IV showing the card before and after being embedded in the article. Figs. VI and VII are the same as Figs. IV and V, only the letters are light and produced on a dark card set in the light plate or article; and Fig. VIII illustrates a dental plate having an advertisement produced thereon by the hereindescribed method.
Referring to Figs. I and Il, l represents a portion of the dental plate or other article, composed of rubber, upon which it is desired that' the signs should appear, and 2 represents the separate block of rubber, which I shall for the purposes of this application herein term the card, and which has the letters 3 formed on it in this instance in relief. These letters are produced on the card 2 by pouring or pressing the soft or unvulcanized rubber into a plaster or other suitable mold previouslyv made by pressing the plaster or other suitable substance down upon the surface of printers type or any other relief-surface representing the ligure to be produced. VThe rubber is then vulcanized while in the plaster mold in order that the design or letters may not be distorted by the vulcanization, after which it is removed and pressed, Jfigured side downward, into the surface of the dental plate, which latter should be of different color from the card, in the present instance it being lighter. The dental plate, with the card 2 sticking to it, is now vulcanized, which thoroughly incorporates the card therein and makes the latter integral, as it were, with the plate l. If the back of the card 2 and the face of the plate l for a slight depth-say as far as the dotted line II II, Fig. I-are now planed down, it will readily be -seen that al1 of the dark card, save the lower portions of the letters 3, will be removed, and these lower portions of the letters will contrast with the su rface of the plate l, thus making the conliguration on the latter as shown in Fig. II.
upward-that is, I sink the body of the card until its face having the impressions therein comes flush or about flush with the surface of the plate l. The intaglio surface of the card 2 may now be provided with a filling of some contrasting shade or color by pressing upon the face of the card a thin sheet 4 of soft or unvulcanized rubber of a different color from the card, after which the Whole is vulcanized to cause the three pieces 1 2 4 to adhere firmly together. It now the surface of the plate is planed down until the stratum 4 of dark rubber lying above the plate 2 is removed, the dark rubber which Was forced into the intaglio will be exposed and dark letters on a light card will be produced, as shown in Fig. V.
If desired, the stratum 4 may be omitted and the card 2 pressed into the plate 1 with its intaglio surface downward, and then, after having been vulcanized, planed oit from the back of the card downward until the body of the latter is entirely removed and the rubber in the cavities o'f the card cut through. The result will be the same as that represented at Fig. V.
When it is desired that a dark card bearing light letters should 'appear on the light plate, it is only necessary to reverse the colors used in Figs. IV and V, as shown at Figs. VI and VII, and the result Will be as indicated in the latter.
Having thus described my invention, the following is What I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The method of producing configurations in articles of vulcanite, which consists in forming such conguration upon a separate card, embedding said configured card into the unvulcanized article of a diiferent color, vulcanizing the Whole, and planing o thesurface until the configuration is exposed, substan- I tially as set forth.
2. The method of producing-configurations in articles of vulcanite, Which consists in producing the contigui-ation upon a separate card of rubber, vulcanizing said card, embedding said card into the unvulcanized article, vulcanizing the article with said card, and planing off the surface until the conigurated face of the card is cut, substantially as set forth.
