UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY P. DURING, OF CARTHAGE, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO TI-IE LAMSON CONSOLIDATED STORE SERVICE COMPANY, OF NET JERSEY.
STORE-SERVICE APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,026, dated April 8, 1890.
Application filed August 16, v1889. Serial No. 320,943. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that l, HARRY P. DURING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Carthage, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and use- I ful Improvements in Store-Service Apparatus;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will en'able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The obj ect of the present invent-ion is to provide certain new and useful improvements in store-service apparatus; and the invention consists in the novel features and combinations which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed in the specification.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this application, Figure lis a side View in elevation, showing the carriage in position for operation. Fig.`2 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the carrier and cash-box secured in position. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 5 is a detail View showing the cash-box and the spring-arms thereof, the arms being in an opened position, the dotted lines indicating the spring-actuated arms in a closed position; and Fig. 6 is a detail view showing one of the spring-retracted propulsion-levers.
Similar letters of reference are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the entire specication and the several figures of the drawings. y
In order to successfully operate my improved apparatus, I provide two vertical supporting-posts A A', suspended from the ceiling or running from the floor, counter, or
. cashiers desk, and between these supports is stretched or suspended the wire or track B. The upper end of the Wire or track is secured to the support A", which support comes in close proximity to the store-counter, (when suspended from the ceiling,) and the lower end of said wire or track is attached to the support A, which support is designed to be in reach of the cashiers desk. Near the top of these supports I secure thereto the brackets C C, to which are pivoted the ends of rearwardly-extending arms C Cof the propellinglevers, the opposite ends of said arms working through elongated slots in the supports A A.
The propelling-lever is represented by the same between the arms e e of the guide E,
which guide is secured to the su pport-ing-posts, as shown in the drawings, a short distance from the bottom. The lower ends of the supporting-posts have secured therein the roller d, which permits of a gradual climb upon the projecting shield or guard of the carrier when motion is imparted thereto, as hereinafter described. The rearward-extending arm C of the bell-crank propelling-lever has its end projecting beyond the outer face of the supporting-post, and has an aperture c formed therein, in order to permit of the operatingrope F being attached thereto. The lower endof said rope passes through the guide f, secured to the rear of the post near the base thereof, and has attached thereto the handle G.
Secured near the top of the lever D and to the supporting-post below the elongated opening formed therein is the spring G2, which serves to hold the lever and return it to place upon release of pressure upon the operatingrope G.
The carrier employed by me in the carrying out of my invention consists of the frame H, said frame having upwardly-extendiu g guards or shields I I at the front and rear, and being provided with forward-extending guides j j. Within the frame II are secured the track wheels or rollers K K above the track, and between the downwardly-extending ears 7c k are secured beneath the track the small keeperrollers 7o k', which are employed so as to pro-- vide against the jumping of the carrier from the track. The wheels being secured beneath the frame H, they are thoroughly protected from clogging by reason of dirt settling thereon.
Secured to the sides of the frame and running parallel and slightly in advance of the forward-extending guidesj j are spring-strips l Z. The forward-extending portion of said strips are first bent inward (designated by the letters it) and then outward, thereby forming at each end of the carrierspring-j aws, the outer ends of which are beveled outward, forming hooks z" i', to engage with and retain the lower end of the lever-bar therein.
The letter M represents the cup of my improved device, provided at diametrically-opposite points with grooves m2 m2, into which lit spring-pressed arms m m', said arms being pivotally connected at the bottom thereof between ears 0 0 by means of pins o 0. The arms extend inward and then downward at an angle, so as to form suitable handles. Above the turned-in portion of the arms I secure a flat spring O, which spring serves to keep a continual pressure upon the arm.
The carrier-frame is provided with the cap N, having at its lower end an annular liange n, which is engaged by the lugs or hooks m m, formed in the upper end of the springpressed arms.
Y'Vhen it is desired to release the cup, so as to permit of insertion of money or the like, the lower ends of the arms forming the handles are pressed inward, while the upper ends are caused to move outward, thus releasing the lug from engagement with the annular fiange and permitting the cup to fall of its own gravity.
The operation of my improved apparatus is as follows: The carrier having been placed in position shown in Fig. I, and the operator, located at any portion of the store, desiring to transmit a message or cash to the central oftice or to the cashiers desk, located near the supporting-post A, he places the same within the cup M and locks the same, as before described. Sudden pull is then given to the operating-rope F,which, being secured to the rearward-extending arm C, causes the downward movement of the same, which movement of necessity throws the lower end of the propelling-lever outward, which, coming in contact with the upward-extending shield or guard I of the carrier, thereby causes the carrier to be forced forward with suiicient impetus to be carried to the post A', where by reason of the spring-jaws engaging with the lower end of the propelling-lever on said post the same will be secured and held from moving backward.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure protection in by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a store-service apparatus, the combination, with the track and its supports, of the carrier having track and keeper rollers secured above and below the track, upwardlyextending guides or guards and spring-jaws at the front and rear of the carrier, and the propelling-lever adapted to be engaged by the spring-jaws, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. In a store-service apparatus, the combination, with the carrier having a cash-box removably secured thereto, spring-jaws provided at each end of the carrier, and upwardlyextending guards or shields, of a bell-crank lever adapted to engage with the jaws, and the rope for operating the lever, substantially as set forth.
In a store-service apparatus, the combination, with the supports and track suspended therefrom, of the carrier running on said track, provided with a frame, track-wheels secured in said frame above the track, keeper-wheels suspended below the track, upwardlyextending guide or guard shields, projecting guide-strips j j, spring-strips projecting beyond the guide-strips at each end of the carrier, said strips being bent inward and outward, so as to form spring-jaws, and a cash-box depending centrally from the carrier, and the propelling bell-crank lever, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
t. In a store-service apparatus, the combination, with the support provided with an elongated opening near the top, of the track suspended therebetween, a cash-car moving thereon, forwardly-extending arms secured to said support near the top thereof, a propelling-lever pivotally secured between said arms having a rearwardly-extendin g arm passing through the elongated opening formed in the support, a guide E, secured to the support, through which said lever passes, an operatingrope secured to the projecting arm ot' the lever, a guide secured near the hase at the rear of the support and through which the operating-rope passes, and a handle secured to the end of the rope, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aliixed my signature in presence of three witnesses.
HARRY P. DURING.
