M. DATTLEBAUM. UMBRELLA ATTACHMENT.
No. 423,990. Patented Mar.'25, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARCUS DATTLEBAUM, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
U MBRELLA ATTACHM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,990, dated March 25, 1890.
Application filed October 28, 1889. Serial No. 328,459. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVIAROUS DATTLEBAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Umbrella Attachments; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to umbrellas, and especially to separate attachments therefor.
My invention consists, essentially, in a receptacle adapted to be readily attached to and detached from the point or end of the umbrella-stick, whereby when the umbrella is closed the water running from it shall drip into the receptacle.
My invention also consists in the novel construction and arrangement of this receptacle, hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and eifective attachment of this character which can be readily applied to and as easily detached from the point of the umbrella-stick, and which, when in use, shall receive all the drip from the umbrella, thereby preventing it from soiling the carpet or other surface upon which the umbrella is stood.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my attachment. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of same. 3 is a view showing its application to an umbrella.
A is a sleeve or ferrule adapted to be slipped upon the point of the umbrella-stick. Around the lower end of this sleeve or ferrule is secured a cup B, the lower open end of which is secured to and communicates with the receptacle 0. This receptacle, though it may consist of any suitable casing of any material, is preferably made of flexible rubber in the form of a bulb, as here shown, and when made in this form the connection with the lower end of the cup is formed by making a hole in the top of the bulb, which is adapted to bepressed over and to bind around a slightly-enlarged lower end Z) of the cup, so that said rubber bulb may be easily attached to and detached from the cup when necessary. The sleeve or ferrule is open at both ends, and its lower end communicates with the cup or the receptacle, so as to permit a readier discharge of the water.
The use of this attachment is as follows: D is the umbrella, and d is the point or end of its stick. The sleeve or ferrule A is slipped upon the point d, so that the entire attachment is connected with the umbrella-stick. The drip from the umbrella falls down into the cup B, and, passing through its perforated diaphragm and through its open bottom, enters and is confined in the receptacle 0, connected with the lower end of the cup. It is intended to carry this cup about in the pocket, and upon entering a room or other place where it is not advisable to set down the wet umbrella, the drip from which would wet the carpet or other surface upon which it is stood, the attachment is taken from the pocket and slipped onto the end of the umbrella-stick. Upon departing it is taken off again and inverted, so that the water is discharged from it, passing out through the open-ended ferrule or sleeve, which thus aflords a freer passage than if it had to pass back again through the cup itself, though this passage, of course, is always open. The advantage of having the receptacle made of rubber is that the discharge of the water may be more effectual by squeezing the bulb, thus securing a more rapid discharge, and also a rubber bulb is more easily and readily attached to the upper portion than any other form of receptacle.
If desired, the whole attachment can be left on the umbrella or only the rubber bulb removed, leaving the ferrule and cup on the Stick.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An attachment for umbrellas, consisting of the elastic compressible bulb or receptacle 0, the cup 13, having an open lower end connected and communicating with the bulb or receptacle, and a ferrule or sleeve A, connected with the cup and adapting the device to be readily connected with and disconnected from the end or point of the umbrella-stick, substantially as herein described.
2. An attachment for umbrellas, consisting of the elastic compressible bulb or receptacle 0, the cup B, having an open lower end connected with and communicating with said bulb or receptacle, and the open-ended ferrule b in the cup, and the open-ended ferrule or sleeve connected With the cup and adapted to be fitted upon the end or point of the umbrella-stick, substantially as herein described. I 5
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
MARCUS DATTLEBAUM.
