Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
D. F. HUNT AND F..S. LYON, OF SOUTH NORWALK, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,378, dated April 19, 1864.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, D. F. HUN'J.` and F. S.
LYON, both of South Norwalk, iu the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Washing Attachment for Wash-Tubs; and we dov hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side sectional view ot' our invention, taken in the line m x, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan or top view ot' the same, partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention relates to a new and improved portable Washing attachment to be applied to wash-tubs.
rlhe object of this invention is to obtain a :imple and economical device for the purpose specified, and one which will admit of the clothes being washed and perfectly cleansed without the liability of being injured and with but a little expenditure of power or labor.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct our invention, we will proceed to describe it.
A represents a rectangular frame, which is of such dimensions that it maybeattached horizontally on the top of an ordinary washtub, D, any suitable fastenings or clamps, C, being employed for such purpose. Within this frame A there is placed transversely a roller, D, which is luted longitudinally and is provided with a crank, E, at one end. The roller D may be constructed of wood or other material, but wood will probably be most generally used.
The upper part of the roller D has a series of small iiuted rollers, F, bearing upon it. Six of these rollers are shown in the drawings, but more or less ot' them may be used.
The shafts a of the rollers F are iitted in segments G, which are connected together by links b, `and the lower ends of the two lower or end segments, Gr, at each end of roller D7 arefconnected to the side pieces, c c, of a tranne7 H, by pins c', which pass through oblong slots cl in said side pieces. The back end of the frameH is connected to the back end of frame A byjoints or hinges e e.
By this arrangement it will be seen that the small rollers F may be made to press down snugly upon and conform to the upper part ot' the roller D by pressing down the front or disengaged end ofthe frame H, and the clothes are passed between the roller D and the small rollers F, the former being turned iirst in one direction and then in the other, so that the clothes may be worked back and forth as long as occasion requires, the clothes passing frofln the suds in the tub between the rollers D i.
In the frame A, at its front part, an inclined corrugated board, l', is placed, the same being designed for rubbing portions of clothes which may not be sufficiently acted upon by the rollers.
We are aware that uted rollers have been previously used and arranged in various ways in close boxes for washing clothes, and we therefore do not claim such device separately or in itself considered; but,
llaving thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'I he iiuted roller D, placed in the frame A, which is attached to the wash-tub B by clamps or any suitable fastenin gs, in combination with the small tluted rollers F, having their shafts ct fitted in segments G, which are connected together by pivots b, and connected to the hinged frame H, all arranged as shown, to form a new and improved washing or rubbing attachment, for the purpose specified.`
