SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,742, dated March 18,1890.

Be it known that I, JOHN HANDSLEY DALEs, civil engineer, a subject of the 'Queen of Great Britain, residing lately at 37 Hanover Street,
Leeds, but now at 45 Lofthouse Place, Leeds, in the county of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in f Steam-Engines, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 14,216, bearing date October 3, 1888,) of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to steam-engines provided with centrifugal governors; and it ccnsists in the construction and combinations of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention is specially but not exclusively applicable to governors of the rightangled lever-arm spring-load type.
In order that my said invention may be `particularly described and ascertained, reference is hereby made to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 an end elevation, illustrating the application of my improvements to the description of ceutrifugal governor above more especially referred to. Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal view (partly in section) of the portion of the upper part of the revolving head. Fig. 4 is an end view of the valve-chest fitted to the power-cylinder O; and Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively vertical and horizontal sections of the same valve-chest, valve, and ports.

The slider H is provided with .a collar J, which by means of pins Working other guide. The rocking shaft L is providedy also with a lever Q, which is connected by means of a rod R with a lever S, Which rocks a spindle T and a small inside lever U,Which actuates a piston or slide valve V, (not necessarily of the type shown,) which in performing its functions ad mits or exhausts steam to either the top or bottom end of the auxiliary power-cylinder O, as may be required by the gear. The cataract-cylinder P is entirely filled with liquid (preferably oil) and hermetically sealed as far as is practicable, andin performing its functions the cataract piston forces the liquid to circulate `through the passage P (shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2) or through a passage in the piston itself. The power and motion of the auxiliary power-cylinder O are transmitted by means of the sliding cross-head WV, links X X, and bellcrank levers X and Y, or other suitable gear, to the expansion valve, throttle-valve, or other gear of the engine to be controlled. Preferably I use an expansion-valve worked and varied in the cut-off by a slot-link die and two eccentric-rods, the slot-link being controlled and held in position by suitable connections With the cross-head W or the bellcrank levers X and Y, or either of them.
Fig. 3 shows a portion of the upper end of the head-casting A with one pair of arms F F, also a horizontal arm Dof the governor IOO in position between the arms F F; also,"the method of placing the anti-friction balls C C in the recess of the governor-arm D by means of the adjusting-bosses E and the pin or bolt G; also, the method of attachment of the links I I as well to theforked end of the governor-arm as to the studs H of the slider H, and the method of fitting the anti-friction balls C in the bearings and adjusting them by means of the nuts H2. y
Referring to Figs. 4, 5, and 6, V is the valve, consisting of two solid pistons c c, united ,together by .cross-webs, as shown. a is the steam -induction port'. 'b is the eductionport. d d are two ports leading to the'cylinder O. The piston-valve is formed without lap. S is the horizontal lever, T the spindle, and U the inside lever working in a slot .in the valve-rod. The action ofv this arrangement of the invention may be described as follows: Vhen the governor-arms D D are thrown outward beyond the position show-n in Fig. 1,'the slider H isv lifted, and also the levers K and Q` and theflink R, by the roel;- in'g of the shaft L. This action moves the lever S of therpiston-valve V, and by thus I Vadmitting steam into, say,v the upper end of the power-cylinder `O the piston is caused to move downward. In so doin g the piston brings down also the levers and other parts which were. first lifted by the governor, andthe consequence is, that the ports of the valve. V, which have been opened by the governor, are
l closed by the subsequent action of the piston,
the'steam-supplyis stopped, and the piston remains in a position corresponding but op-y posite to that of the slider H. If the auxiliary piston happens to overact, such overactiomby moving the valve beyond the position of closedl ports, opens to the exhaust that end of the cylinder Whichcontains the excess of pressure, and thus exactly adjusts the relative positions of the slider andthe powerpiston. Any tendency toward a jerky action ot" the parts is counteracted` by the cataractcylinder. d

as well as that above described, with or with-I out a power-cylinder, and also with orwithout a cataract-cylinder.

In a steam-engine governor,`the combination of the bracket-arms F,the adjustable bosses E, supportedin said brackets and provided with conical bearings, the oscillating governor arms or levers D D', having recessed centers B, the anti-friction balls or rollers C, located between said centers and conical bearings, theslider H, having a link-connection l with thegovernor-arm s, the rock-shaft L, having a lever-connection with the slider, and the valve and its connections, substantially as described.
2. In a steam-engine governor, the combination `of the cylinders O P,'the Vpiston-rods -M N, the shaft L, connected with said rods and provided with anti-friction ball-bearings, t-he slider H, the'lever-conneetion K between said' shaft and slider, andthe oscillating governor arms or levers D D supported in antifriction ball-bearings and having a link-connection I with the slider, substantially as'described.
3. In a steam-engine governor, thev combination of the power-cylinder O, the cataract'- cylinder P, the valve V, the piston-rods M N, the rock-shaft L, connected withv saidl rods and provided with anti-friction bearings, the slider H, the lever-connection? K between' saidY shaft and slider, the lever Q, mounted on the roekshaft L, and the rod R, lever S, spindle T, and lever U, whereby the rock-shaft andvalve are connected, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the bracket-arms F, the oscillating right-angled governor. arms or levers Dl D', the balls or rollers C, supporting the oscillating arms or levers, the spindle to which the said arms or levers are connected, the slider H, the rock-shaft L,-having;alever. connection K withrthel slideiythe pQwer-cylinder O, the cataract-cylinder` P, and the: piston-rods M N, connected with the roch-shaft, substantially as described.
