DOUGH-KNEADING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,619, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed August 24, 1889. Serial No. 821,808. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BRYANT I-I. MELENDY, of Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Dough-Kneading Machine, of which the-following is a full clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to dough-kneading machines such as shown and described in Letters Patent No. 381,631, granted to me April 24:, 1888.
The object of the present. invent-ion is to provide a new and improved dough-kneading machine, which is simple and durable inconstruction and very effective in operation.
lhe invention consists in certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front view of the improvement, with parts in section and broken away.
Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the crank-arm. -Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the crank-handle. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan View of the same on the line 00 0c of Fig. 4. 6 is a sectional side elevation of a modified form of the scraper, and Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional elevation.
The improved dough-kneading machine is provided with a frame A, having the sides 13 Bconnected with each other at the rear by a transversely-extendin g bottom piece 0 and by a transversely-extending inclined partition D, on which is placed the metallic plate E, secured in place by a screw E, as is plainly shownrin Figs. 1 and '7. x
Between the sides B is held a roller F, provided with the trunnions F and F, mounted to turn in suitable recesses B, formed in the sides B B. The upper ends of the recesses B connect with outwardly-extending slots 13*, in which are held the blocks G G, fulcrumed on pins or screws G secured in the side edges of a transversely-extending-front board H,
held between the sides B and pivoted near its upper end on the screws H, secured in the sides B, as is plainly shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 7.

The hooks I serve to lock the blocks G and G and the front board 11 in place, so that the trunnions -F' and F are prevented from moving out of the recesses B, and the lower edge of the front board H rests on the top of the roller F.
When the operator desires to remove the roller F, he unhooks the hooks I from the pins I and then swings the blocks G and G outward, so that the front board I-I swings with the said blocks into the position shown in dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 7. The recesses B and the slots B are thus uncovered and the trunnions F and F,with the roller F, can be lifted out of the same.
Against the under side of the roller F presses a scraper J, secured ona transverselyextending beam J, adjustably secured to the under side at the front of the sides B. The scraper J is secured in place by set-screws J As shown in Fig. 6, an inclined slotis formed in the beam J, in which the scraper J is set,
small nails being driven through the scraperJ and the beam to hold the said scraperin place. By arranging the scraper as shown, when the dough is in the machine and passes out between the plate E and the roller F, it exerts an outward pressure against the. roller, so that even if the trunnions of the roller have become worn the roller remains in about the same position relatively to the scraper.

The operator may at any time conveniently move the handle L, for engaging the offset L with one of the slots K or K so that the hook L rests against the rear of the cross K of the said arm K, thus locking the handle to the arm K. By placing the handle L with its offset L in the horizontal slot K the handle L is made longer than when the offset L is placed in the vertical slot K By this simple means the handle L is lengthened or shortened in relation to the trunnion F.
To one of the sides B is secured a bracket 0, provided with the inwardly-extendin g projections O and adapted to rest on top of a table Q, while the under side of the latter is engaged by a screw P, screwing in a pro- 7 jection 0 secured on the lower end of the bracket 0.
Other suitable means may be employed for supporting the frame A above the table or bench.
The dough is placed in the frame A- between the sides B, and rests against the plate E and the front board II and also on top of the roller F. The further operation is similar to the one described in the patent above referred to.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a dough-kneading machine, the combination, with a frame provided with sides and cross-pieces, of a roller journal'ed in the said frame, blocks held on top of the rollertrunnions, and a front board pivoted between the said sides and 011 which the said blocks are pivoted, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a dough-kneading machine, the combination, with a frame provided with sides and cross-pieces, of a roller journaled. in the said frame, blocks held on top of .the roller- .trunnions, a front board pivoted between the said sides and on which the said blocks are pivoted, and means, substantially as described, for locking the said blocks and a front board in place, as set forth.
3. In a dough-kneading machine, the com- 7, bination, with a frame provided with sides and cross-pieces and open at the top and bottom, of atransversely-inclined partition held between the said sides, a metallic plate held in front of the said partition, a roller journaled in the said sides, a frontboard pivoted between the said sides and extending with its lower edge to the said roller, and means for locking the board in position, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a dough-kneading machine, the combination, with a frame provided with sides and cross-pieces and open at the top and bottom, of atransversely-inclined partition held between the said sides, a metallic plate held in front of the said partition, a roller journaled' in the said sides, a front board pivoted between the said sides and ezgtending with its lower edge to the said roller, means for locking the board in position, and a scraperheld on the under side of the said sides and in contact with the lower part of the. said roller, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a dough-kneading machine, the combination, with a frame provided withsides and cross-pieces and open at thetop and bottom, of a transverselyeinclined partition held between the said sides, a metallic plate held in front of the said partition, a roller journaled in the said sides, a front board pivoted between the said sides and extending with its lower edge to the said roller, a scraper held on the under side of the said sides and in contact with thelower part of the said roller, and blocks pivoted on the said front board and fitting into recesses in the said sides to hold the rollerin place, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a dough-kneading machine, the combination, with a frame provided with sides and cross-pieces and open at the top and bottom, of a transversely-inclined partition held 1 pins on the said sides, substantially as shown and described.
7. In a dough-kneading machine, the combination, with a frame and a roller journaled therein, of a crank-arm secured on one of the trunnions of the said roller and provided with crossing slots, acranlf-handle provided with a projection adapted to engage one of the said crossing slots, and a hook formed on one end of the said projection, substantially as shown and described. g 8. In a dough-kneading machine, the com-v bination, with a crank-arm secured to the roller-trunnion and provided with crossing slots, of a crank-handle provided with a projection adapted to engage one of the said slots, substantially as shown and described.
9. In a dough-kneading machine, the combination, with aframe and a roller journaled therein, having one of its trunnions provided with a conical oflset having longitudinal recesses F of a crank-arm provided with crossing slots and with ribs K substantially as shown and described.
