(No Model.)
A. ME'NDEL.
COLLAR FOR HORSES.
No. 423,566. Patented Mar. 18 1890.
UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
ALERED MENDEL, OF STREHLE'N, NEAR DRESDEN, SAXONY, GERMANY.
COLLAR FOR HORSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,566, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed September 18, 1889. Serial No. 324,292. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED MENDEL, a subject of the King of Saxony, and a resident of Strehlen, near Dresden, Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collars for Horses, of which the following is a specification.
In horse-collars as heretofore made the collar rest-s wholly or partly on the fleshy part of the neck, and in case where it does not fit properly it causes abrasion of the skin and very often rubs off part of the mane, while the part bearing on the neck in nowise assists In order to make the ordinary horse-collar fit as exactly as possible to the form of the shoulders and neck, it is sometimes made to rest on a pad. The collar has thus hitherto been mainly carried'by the neck of the horse, and it is this that I wish to avoid.
According to my invention I shift the weight of the collar onto the part of the horse which is best adapted for carrying the same-via, the back; and to this end my invention consists in a'modifiedform of breast-collar, the front portion of which rests against the shoulder-blade and is continued around the sides of the horses back to a saddle which rests on a -the back of the animal.
drawing a load the collar shall not present an absolutely-rigid mass, but conform to the contour of the body and possess the desired play for the alternate lateral leg movements.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan view, illustrating my invention.
The plates or parts a co of my collar are similar and are united in front of the chestby a hinge or link b. Each plate a is of metal, wood, or other suitable material, and may extend in one piece to the saddle c, or said plates may wholly or partlv consist of open-work frames d.
In the drawings this collar is shown by way of example as made of metal plate a, conas desired to fit the form of the horse.
nected to the saddle c by open-work frames (1. The plate a or the openwork'frames are movably fastened to the saddle c. This may be done by a screw-bolt 6, having a head as flat as possible and passed from within through one of the holes provided in the saddle. The bolt goes through a slot in the plate or frame and has a nut, which, however, is notscrewed down so tight as to prevent the plate or frame having a little play.
A number of holes are provided in the saddle, in order that the connection of the plate a or frame cl with the saddle may be adjusted saddle 0 may consist of a-plate portion having, by preference, a felt or leather flap or lining underneath. or lining may be held in place by a bellyband. here the plate a or frame d rests against the horse it is padded asrequired.
The shape of the plate a or frame (Z on each side of the horse may, if desired, be varied, so as to follow or deviate from a direct line to the saddle 0. They might assume a more upward direction from the chest and then a horizontal direction, or nearly so, to the saddle c. In such form a larger part of the collar maybe made to rest against the shoulderblade, through which the power is exerted on the collar; also, in such form the parts a and d on each side of the horse may be connected by a metal or wooden bow or strap over ,the
neck of thehorse, for the purpose of preventing the side parts of the collar from bending or expanding, but without the bow or strap resting on the horses neck. The traces may be hooked to any suitable part of the plates or frames (1. i
My improved collar is especially adapted to horses, but can be made applicable to all draft-animals-such, for example, as mules.
I claim as my.invention The The saddle with the flap 1. The combination, with the saddle, of the 2. A collar for horses, consisting of the Iii-testimony that I claim the foregoing as padded plates 01, the link 1), connecting the my invention I have signed my name in presplates at the front, the frames d, connected ence of two subscribing Witnesses.
at one end to the plates Ct, the saddle c,' hav- ALFRED MENDEL. 5 ing adj ustment-holes and a girth, and a con- Witnesses:
nect-ion between the back ends of the frames VVILHELM WIESENHUTTER,
d to the saddle, substantially as set forth. 1 RICHARD KUNZE.
