UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK R. TAYLOR, OF MOUNT VERNON, NEVYORK.
BOX-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 422,850, dated March 4, 1890.
Application filed December 12, 1889. Serial No. 333,495. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FRANK R. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box-Lid Fastenings,
of which the following is a speciiication.
Fig. 3 is a section along y y, Fig. I.
This invention has for its object to provide novel means for fastening the lids or covers of boxes; and it consists in the features of construction and combination or arrangement of devices vhereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which*n Figure l is a side elevation of a box and cover. Fig. 2 is a section 'along fo, Fig. l. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the lugs.
The letter A indicates the box, and B is the cover or lid. To the cover are secured one or more lugs C, and to the box are secured one or more lugs D. The lugs C D are adapted to interlock, one of the lugs having a tongue E, adapted to enter a suitable recess in the other lug, so as to cause an interlocking of the lugs and securing the cover to thebox. The lugs are secured in place by fastenings F, such as screws or rivets.
By placing the cover on the box and moving or sliding the cover along so as to canse the lugs C Dto interlock the cover is secured to the box, while by sliding the cover in the opposite directionY disengagement of the lugs is obtained, so that the cover can lbe taken from the box.
The contact faces of the lugs C D are bevv elcd, as indicated by the dividing-line G, Figs.
2 and 3, between the lugs. This beveling of thc lugs prevents the side or wall of the box from springing or being bent inward and secures a proper relative position of the boxwall to the cover. The free end H of the tongueE is also beveled, and the contact part for said end I-I on the lug C is similarly beveled, so that in case the box-wall should be bent the forcing home of the cover to bring the end H to its place on lug C will straighten the box-wall ont again. The fastening device thus not only secures the cover to the box, but also secures a proper alignment of the box wall or side and prevents thebox-wall from bending or being forced inward, so that the box always presents a neat appearance and the contents of the box are not liable to be disturbed orinj ured. The beveled contact edges also prevent the lugs striking against one another when the lid is movedinto place in case the box-wall should be bent; but said beveled contact edges en able the lugs to interlock and to gradually straightenthe bent boxwall as thelid is moved into place. The lugs on the box are situated on the opposite outer sides of the box, and the lugs on the box and cover can be polished or finished so as to be tasty in appearance.
What I claim as new, and desire by Letters Patent, iss
The combination, with a box and cover, of lugs on the opposite outer sides of the box, and lugs on the cover arranged to interlock with the box-lugs by fitting against` the under to secure faces of the latter, said lugs having their contact faces beveled or inclined to prevent the box wall or side being pressed inward, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK R. TAYLOR.
