BOOT OR SHOE HEEL FASTENING.

Be it known tllat I, JOHN DUERK', a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsyl= Vania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boot or Shoe Heel Fastenings, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a detachable heel provided with means for reliably connecting the same with the sole of a boot or shoe, as wi ll be hereinafter fully setforth and claimed.

Figures 1 and 2 represent perspective views of heel-fastenings embodying my invention. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal vertical section thereof. Fig. 4 represents a longitudinal vertical section of a portion thereof on an enlarged scale and slightly modified.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates the heel of a boot or shoe, the same being removable from the corresponding portion B of the sole for purposes of repairs, renewals, Sac. Connected with the under side of the portion B is a plate 0, of U shape, which is adapted to engage with a similarly shaped flanged plate D, secured to the top of the heel A. Projecting forward from the center of the top or upper part of the heel and secured thereto is aqcatch E, which is adapted to engage with a lip F, which projects forward from the center of the plate 0, it being noticed that said lip has an opening G to receive the nose of the catch E. The heel is provided with a recessed or cut out portion, in which the spring tongue or catch E has play.

In order to apply the heel to the sole, it is presented to the latter in such position that the flange of the plate D rides over the sides of the plate C, said flange opening inwardly, forming a groove and engaging with said plate 0 a tongue, thus connecting the sides and rear of the heel with the plate 0. The catch E enters the opening of the lip F, whereby the heel is prevented from disengagement from said plate 0, and consequently from the sole. In order to prevent displacement of the catch E from the lip F, a screw II is passed through said catch and tongue into the portion B, thus'locking said parts E F and keeping them close together and against said portion B, whereby they are materially concealed from in front, it being noticed that the catch and lip are provided with openings to receive said screws II.

It is evident that when the screw is re moved the catch may be withdrawn from the lip, after which the heel maybe displaced by sliding the same rearward, the flange of the plate D clearing the plate 0, whereby the heel is free, so as to be repaired, renewed, or for any purpose requiring the same.

In Fig. 3 the catch is shown as bent to a greater extent than that shown in Fig. 4, said catch in either case being preferably made of elastic or flexible metal or material.

The plates 0 and D need not necessarily be U shape, as they may be angular or right lined, as shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 1, they constituting a tongue and groove as means for connecting the heel with the sole, and admitting of the separation of the same when. so required.

The plate 0 has secured to its upper face a curved bar or strip J,"which re-enforees the same, provides increased hold for the fast ening tacks or nails, and sets out the plate 0 from the portion. B, so that the sides of said plate may readily engage with the flange or groove of the plate D.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-= 1. A heel for a boot or shoe, having a plate secured thereto, constructed with a flange forming a groove, and a catch secured to said heel to project beyond the breast thereof, and formed with a nose at its free end, combined with a plate secured to the sole of a shoe, over the edges of which the flange of the heel plate is fitted, and having a tongue with an opening therein to receive the nose of the catch attached to the heel, substantially as described.
