' "4U/mv@ NITED STAT-Es PATENT OFFICE.,
FRANCIS E. SHUCK, OF MOBERLY, MISSOURI.
STORM-DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,034, dated February 11, 1890.
Application filed September 12,1888- Serial No. 285,260. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS E. SHUCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moberly,in the county of Randolph and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Storm-Doors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
I do not claim to be the original inventor of storm-doors; butI do claim as new and useful the combination of the various parts as will be hereinafter shown. The appliances themselves are old and in common use, and I lay no claim to their mechanism.
My invention relates to improvements in storm-doors in which they are made portable by means of hinges and the folding of the parts together; and the objects of my invention are to construct such doors so that they can be taken down and stored away without injury to them in a compact form until required for fut-ure use, thus avoiding the loss of material when the doors are to be taken down and the cost of constructingnew doors when again needed. I attain these objectsby the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is the storIn-door in use, showing its construction from an interior view; Fig. 2, the door folded up when not in use; Fig. 3, the door being taken down and folded, and Fig. 4 the roof folded.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A denotes the hinge or hinges connecting two parts of the roof C C. The sides or frame F are provided With hinges B to facilitate folding and to connect the said sides with other hinges A are attached, and at the other end or near the eaves with cleats d d, which form a close joint at the intersection of the roof and sides, and also serve to brace the said sides when the roof is in position, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
When the structure is to be taken down, lift off the roof C O and fold its parts together, still connected by means of hinge or hinges A, when the roof detached will appear folded, as in Fig. 4. Then detach the sides of the structure F F from the building and fold them onto the entrance-door, still connected by means of the hinges B B B B, (see Fig. 3,) when the structure, completely folded, will appear as in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim, and secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a storm-door, the roof thereof, provided atits central portion with beveled pieces e e and at or near its eaves with cleats d d, in combination with the hinged sides or frame F, said beveled pieces and cleats adapted to brace the roof and frame and keep them in position, substantially as described.
2. In a portable storm-door, the combination ofthe hinged sides thereof with the detachable roof C, formed in two parts, each part provided with a beveled piece e and a cleat d, and each beveled piece provided with a hinge or hinges which connect the parts of the said roof, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
F. E. SHUGK.
