Description

(NoModeL') J. M. JONES.
PAPER COVER.
No. 421,028. Patented Feb. 11,1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH lVLJ ONES, PARIS, KENTUCKY.
PAPER COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,028, dated February 11, 1890.
Application filed July 26, 1889, Serial No. 318,709- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. JONES, of Paris, in the county of Bourbon and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Covers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in paper covers.
Hitherto the customary manner of attaching covers or backs to paper, and also of attaching the sheets together, is to place a sheet, usually of some other color than'white and of a tough and tenacious character, back of the sheets to be covered, with one end projecting out suflicient distance to form a flap adapted to be lapped over the edge of the sheets. Paper-fasteners are then inserted through the several thicknesses of papers, and thus they are held together.
The object of my invention'is to provide a simple and inexpensive cover and fastener combined for sheets of paper, which may be easily attached, and when attached will have a neat appearance, will cover the fasteners, and prevent the sheets from coming apart.
With this end in View my invention consists in a sheet of paper one end of which is gummed to form a flap, and a fastener se- 4 cured to the paper near the flap.
It further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as Will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View of the cover with the flap upturned and the fasteners in position. Fig. 2 shows 7 the cover with the flap stuck down to the paper, and Fig. 3 shows the flap stuck to the back of the folded cover.
A represents the cover, made of any quality and color of paper and of any size, although these are generally about the size of foolscap sheets and enough longer to form a flap 1 at one end. This flap is gummed on its inner face. Metal fasteners 2 2, preferably two in number, are secured to the eovenadjacent to cover at this point and also retaining the fasteners in place.
The sheets to be fastened together are pushed down over the fasteners at their upper edges until punctured by them, and then the points are bent outward or inward, as the case may be, so that they lie flat against the paper. The flap is then moistened by the tongue and stuck down over the edge of the paper and fasteners, or after folding the sheets is stuck across the back of the cover to keep it folded and make a convenient package for the mail.
The fasteners might be made in diiferent shapes or be differently attached and other slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do" not Wish to limit myself to the particular construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A paper cover consisting of a sheet of flexible material having a gummed flap at one end and fasteners secured to the cover adjacent to the inner edge of the gummed flap, substantially as set forth.
2. A "paper cover consisting of a sheet of paper having fasteners located thereon, and a re-enforcing strip stuck to the cover over the heads of the fasteners for holding the latter in place, substantially as set forth.
3. A paper cover consisting of a sheet of paper, metal fasteners having their heads stuck to the cover, and a re-enforcing strip stuck to the cover over the heads of the fasteners, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with a sheet of paper specification in the presence of two subscribhaving a gummed flap at one end, of fastening witnesses. ers stuck to the sheet adjacent to the inner 7 edge of the flap, and a re-enforcing strip JOSEPH JONES 5 stuck to the sheet and adapted to hold the WVitnesses:
fasteners in place, substantially as set forth. E. W. JONES, I11 testimony whereof I have signed this "WM. MYALL.
