UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
DANIEL O. STAUFFER, OF MASSILLON, OHIO,-
CLOTHES-DRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming pert of Letters Patent No. l420,838, dated February 4,1890.
Application lecl December 5, 1889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL C. STAUEEEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Massillon,in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Clothes- Rack, of which the following is a s peciiication.
This invention has relation to clothes-racks adapted either .for the exhibition of goods or for the drying of clothes during the operation of laundering the same, and among the objects in view are to provide a clothes-rack adapted to be revolved, so as to present differently-located articles to view or to a fire for drying purposes, which rack is adapted to be folded or disjointed, so as t-o be set aside when not in use and occupy but very little room. Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed outI in the claims.
Referring' to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a clothes-rack constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, some of the supporting-arms being raised and others lowered,
as for packing or when not in use. Fig. 3 is a perspective of one of the supporting-arms and its spring-hanger detached.
Like numerals indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings. 1 represents a supporting-standard, at the lower end of which I provide ordinary feet 2. Upon the upper end of the standard there is mounted a circular bracket 4, having a central opening to receive the upper reduced threaded end 3 of the standard, the perimeter of the bracket being upturned to form an annular flange 5,which at intervals is provided with radiating slots 6, and between the slots are located a series of radiating strengthenin g-ribs 7. A
8 represents a boss secured by nails or other securing devices 9 to the center of the brackettl and projecting upwardly therefrom. The upper end of the boss S is provided with a central bore 10, and the annular edge of the bore is outwardly inclined, as at 11. The base of the boss is also provided with an annular exterior recess 12, and at its bottom is provided with an internally-threaded opening Serial No. 332,641. (No model.)
adapted to receive the upper end of the standard.
13 represents clothes-supporting arms, one of which is located in each ofthe slots 6, the rear ends of the arms being chamfered or cut away, as at 14.
15 represents a wire supporting-bail, of which there is a series corresponding in number to the number of arms 13, the lower end of each of which is pivotallyconnected, as at 16, to theparm 13 at its lower edge and near its rear orinner end, and the upperends of the bails are bent to form hooks 17, conforming in con-A tour to the incline 11 and adapted to take into the bore 10. Thetendency of the springbail of each arm is to draw the same up under the shoulder formed at the upper end of the recess 12, and by drawing the arm outwardly, so that the rear end of the same may pass the shoulder, it is apparent that the arm may be swung to a vertical position7 as shown in Fig. 2.
18 represents a cap provided with a tenon 19, adapted to snugly fit within the bore 10, and thus maintain the ends of the springbails in the bore, the `surrounding edge of the tenon being inwardly inclined, as at 20, to agree with the edge 11 and coact with the same in maintaining the series of spring-bails 15 in their proper position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination, with a supportingstandard, of a bracket mounted thereon and provided with an annular upturned rim or flange and slotted radially, a boss mounted on the bracket and provided with an annular recess, a series of movable arms mounted in the slots and terminating in the recess, and a series of wire arm-supporting bails pivotally connected to the arms and at their upper ends secured to the boss, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a support andan annularbracket, the edge of which is upturned and provided with a series of radiating slots, of a boss mounted on the bracket and having lan upper boro and an outer lower recess, a
series of arms mounted in the slots and hav- IOO ing their rear ends chamfered and adapted to take into the recess, and a series of springporting arms and their upper ends bent to conform to the inclined edge and terminating in the hore, and a plug or eap having a tenon fitting the bore, and a surrounding inelined edge adapted to fit the edge of the boss, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I elaim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiiixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
DANIEL C. "FAUFFER.

ROBERT W. MCCAUGHEY, WM. E. LEWIS.
