To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. PorNDExTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Ii'nprovements in a Combined Saw Gage and Jointer, of which the following is a speci- Vlicationl My said invention consists in certain improvements in that class of tools used in fitting saws for use, and relates more especially to the means by which the jointing-iile is held in place on the frame, and to the form of the gage for the clearing or raking teeth, as will hereinafter be more particularly described and claimed.

In said drawings the portions marked A represent the main frame of the device; I3, the locking device by which the iile is held in position; C, the gage for the clearing or raking teeth, and D the file.
The frame A is a casting of the form shown, and is provided with projections and flanges, against which the file is clamped when the tool is in position for use. The relation of the lile `to the remainder of the device when the tool is used for jointing the ends of the points of the teeth is indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l, and its position when used for jointing the sides of the points of the teeth is indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2.
As will be noticed by an examination of the drawings, the file is held in either position by the same clamping device B, one edge of which is adapted to come in contact with said le when in one position and the other edge when the le is in the other position. Said clampingdevice B is mounted on a boss or projection a on the frame A, and is held there by a head or nutor equivalent device a. The
slot in said device B which passes over this projection a is inclined somewhat, so that when said clamping device is moved in one direction it will force one edge against the file when it is on that side of it, and moved in the other direction the other edge will be forced against the tile when located upon that side, as shown by the drawings, Figs. l and 2. The boss or projection a has wings or at surfaces, as shown in Fig. 6, which keep its edges in parallel relation to the planes occupied by the file when in position at all times. As will be noticed by an examination of Fig. 5, the file, when in the position to joint the sides of the points of the teeth, is slightly below the surface of the ianges on the tool, thus allowing for the set in said teeth.
The gage O for the clearing or raking teeth is formed of hardened metal and secured to the frame A by a screw A', which passes through said frame and the boss a thereon,
land on its point carries the head or nut a', which holds the clamping device B in position. The hole in this gage through which this screw passes may be, and preferably is, slightly larger' than the body of the screw, in order that a slight adj ustment may be effected; but such an adjustment at the most is only trifling, and is not commonly necessary at all, and therefore a slight looseness in the hole for the screw is all that is required.
The particular novelty in my gage consists in a projection c extending out from the center of its upper portion, the top surface of which is parallel with the top surface of the gage. This projection extends between the two prongs of the clearing-tooth when the device is in position for use for the purpose of jointing such teeth, and extends to the other side of the saw from the device, and thus insures that the operator shall keep his file substantially parallel, and obviates all danger of jointing olf the points of these clearing-teeth on a downward slant, as might be, and often is, the case where my improved device is not employed. lVhere it is employed, tipping up the end of the iile next the operator raises it entirely free from the points of the teeth.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. The combination,
in a saw-tool, of the IOO frame having fianges or projections against whichl a file may rest, and a clamp portion adaptedv to move longitudinally of said frame on a projection or boss thereon, said clamp portion having an inclined slot which passes over said boss or projection, whereby when it is moved its edges are caused to approach or recede from the iile when said Iile is in place.
2. The combination, in a saw-tool, of the frame A, having a boss or projection a and flanges or projections against which a file may rest, and a clamp portion B, having an inclined slot and mounted upon said boss or projection, substantially as described, and for the purposes specied.
3. In a saw-tool, in combination with the frame thereof, a gage for the raking or clearing teeth, having a projection in the same plane as its operative su rface adapted to pass between the prongs of said clearing-teeth when the tool is being used for jointing said clearing-teeth, substantially as set forth.
