SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. {117,149, dated December 10, 1889.
Application filed July 5, 1889- To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALTER H. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in Door Checks and Bumpers, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to door checks and bumpers; and it consists of the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the door-check attached to a door. Fig. 2 is a side elevation view, partly in sec tion. Fig. 3 is a front view of the stop in partly-rotated position. i

A cam or stop 0 is provided with the projecting arms c,journa1ed in the lower extremity of said depending arms. Said stop or cam is provided with a lower weight-arm or lever E, having a curved face and pro vided with a longitudinal slot 6, in which is fitted the rubber face 6, that is' adapted to engage with the floor. A secondary arm or lever f is provided with the outwardly-extending extremities f, of greater length than the space between the two depending lugs, with which said extremity is adapt-ed to engage, and thereby prevent the complete rotation of the stop. Said secondary lever is also provided with a transverse slot f, in which is fitted the rubber engaging face f, that is adapted to have engagement with the wall of the room when the door to which the check is attached is thrown back to its utmost limit. This secondary arm or lever acts as a bumper, while the primary arm or cam may also act as a bumper when the stop is turned outwardly, so that the face of said primary cam or lever projects beyond the depending lugs. \Vhen the cam is in this latter position, the secondary lever engages with the depending lugs, and thereby prevents the complete fotation of the stop. By facing both the primary and secondary levers with rubber I protact with the floor, whether consisting of wood, carpet, glass, or marble, that the door cannot slip. It also presents such a yielding surface that it will not mar the paint of the base-board when the door is thrown violently open. In this latter case I of course ver when they act in the nature of a bumper.
It will be seen that my device is simple and complete and serves both as a door-check and a door-bumper, whereby the door may be held open in any position desired; or by simply turning the cam upward it may be freed from contact with the floor, whereupon the door may be moved as easily as though the check were not attached to it, while the check itself acts as a bumper to prevent mar ring and disfiguring the paint on the baseboard. In case the door is pushed violently open without inverting the primary arm or cam, then the secondary arm, with its yielding outer face, is brought into engagement with the base-board and also prevents any niarring of the latter.
It will be further noticed that the outer or engaging face of the cam or primary lever is eccentric in relation to its pivotal or journaling points, whereby the greater the forward pressure exerted by the door the'greater the frictional engagement that occurs between said eccentric outer face and the floor. On the other hand, the door may be opened by a person entering from the outside, even though the check is in engagement with the floor, and all that is necessary to free it entirely from floor-engagement is to partially rotate it until the projecting ears of the secondary lever are brought into engagement with the depending lugs.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings set forth in detail mechanism in embodiment of my invention. Change maybe made therein, provided the principle of construction respectively recited in the following claim is retained and employed.
