To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it. known that I, ALEXANDER C. HUMPH- REYS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, (Chestnut Hill,) in the county o`f` Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and u'seful Improvements in Gas-B urnersfor IncandescentIllumination, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved gas-burner for consuming noncarbureted water-gas or water-gas in producing light by the incandescence of a refractory hood or mantle suspended over the burner, as in the Welsbach system of incandescing gas-lighting.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents my improved gasburner in partly-sectional side elevation with a gallery attached for supporting a mantle or hood above the burner, and a chimney in which said hood is ,inclosed Fig. 2 is a perspective View of my improved water gas burner; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sect-ion of the same. y
The burner consists of a tube or hollow cylinder 1, having a nearly-uniform diameter to issue in an annular series of jets in close proximity to the tubular hood or mantle which is to be suspended over and around the upper end of the burner.
The thimble 3 on the lower end of the burner is internally threaded to engagea gasiiXture 5, as shown in Fig. l, and on the tube 1, above the thimble, is spun an annular shoulder 6, which may serve to support a lamp-gallery 7, placed around the burner. This gallery may be formed, as usual, to support a chimney 8Y and a globe 9, or it may be of such diameter as to be capable of supporting a chimney only. To the under side of the gallery-body are attached arms 10, connecting with a ring 11, that can be made to support the gallery by resting onthe annular shoulder or head 6; or the gallery may be supported or suspended from its upper end by means of an inwardly-flanged ring or collar 12, resting on the top of the burner-tube. This ring or collar is connected with the gallery-body by ribs 13, that are braced by a horizontal ring 14, integral therewith, and
thereby imparting to the gallery a proper de- By igniting the water-gas issuing from the annular series of perforations or gas-exits 4 in the upper end of the burner a number of intensely-heating flame-jets will be brought in such Vproximity to the interior surface of the tubular hood or mantle 15 as will quickly cause it to emit a brilliant light by incandescence, and thus enable the heating but nonilluminating qualities of water-gas to be utilized for illuminating purposes in the mos efcient manner. i
What I claim as my invention is- A gas-burner for incandescent illumination, consisting of a straight tube 1, provided with an internally-threaded attaching-thimble 3 at its lower end, an annular bead 6, located on the'tube above said thimble to aord support for a chimney-gallery, and a horizontal plate 2, set directly into and closing the upper end of t-he tube and provided with an annular seriesof gas-exits 4, substantially as described.
