FASTENING FOR SHOE-SOLES.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,771, dated November 26, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ CARL HEINRICH FICKERT, a subject of the King of Prussia, re,
siding at Schwerin, in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg, German Empire, have in vented an Improved Fastening for Boot or Shoe Soles, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in France, No. 193,961, dated November 7, 1888,) of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to an improved manner of fastening soles to the uppers of boots or shoes.
The invention has for its object to provide av fastening' that firmly unites the sole to the upper and which doesnot weaken the leather.

In Figs. l to et there are placed below the insole a the sheet-metal clasps or plates b, the ends of which are bent up at right angles and are passed through slits cut into the insole. Next these ends of clasps b are bent down over a small sheet-metal plate c, and then they are flattened down on the upper surface of the insole, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. 4In the center of the metal clasp b a small hole is provided, through which a screw d enters after traversing the sole A and the uppers.
The screw d is firmly grasped by the plate b, which acts as a nut, and a solid, strong, and lasting connection is thus established between the several parts traversed by the screw. A suitable number of screws d and plates b are provided to secure the sole to the uppers and insole. By this fastening the elasticity of the leather is not in any manner impaired.
The modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6 consists in substituting for clasp b a clasp b', having two lugs b4 at each bent-up end. These lugs after passing through the insole are bent down, and are then bent up again to enter into the leather lot` the insole, as clearly shown in Fig. 5.
In Figs. 7 and 8 the plate c is omitted,and in lieu of the clasp b a fork-shaped clasp b2 is used. g through slits in the insole, after which the prongs are flattened down and are then bent up again to enter the leather. This mode of securing the metal plates is more particularly intended t'or boots and shoes of light make. If desired, a sole e' may be placed upon the insole to protect the foot from contact with plates b.
I claim as my invention- The combination of sole A and insole a with a perforated clasp having bent-up edges that are passed through the insole, and with a screw d, passed through the soles and said clasp, substantially as specified.
