NTTED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
JOHN O. STEPHENS, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
TRUSS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,073, dated November 12, 1889.
Application filed August 22,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN O. STEPHENS, a citizen of theUnited States of America, residing at St.-Joseph,in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Truss-Pads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked there-on, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has reference to certain new and useful improvements in means for attaching truss-pads to their supporting-bands.
The object of the invention is to provide a pad-support by means of which the pads can be adjusted, first, laterally upon the band; second, at different angles inwardly; third, vertically, and, fourth, turned upon the ad justable spindle.
NVith the above objects in view my present improvement consists in the combination of the supporting-band of a pad-holder mounted on said band and provided with a Vertical slot through which the band passes, a securing-screw intersecting said slot, said padholder having a recess within which is pivoted a spindle, the lower portion of which is rounded, an offset below the pivoted point of the spindle carrying a set-screw for adjusting said spindle inwardly, and a pad mounted on said spindle so as to be adjustable vertically and laterally thereon,as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of a truss constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view.
A refers to the spring or band of a truss of ordinary construction, and is adapted to carry one or two pads, as may be desired.
B has reference to a casting having a slot 1) near its upper end of sufficient size to allow the bandAto be passed therethrough, and the front portion of the casting is provided with a screw-threaded perforation, which'intersects the slot b and is adapted to be engaged by a set-screw b, the inner end of which bears 1889. Serial No. 321,681. (No model.)
upon the band A to retain the casting in place when it has been properly adjusted. The lower end of the casting is extended to provide the portion 0, which has an inclined screwthreaded perforation adapted to receive a set-screw cl, the end of which abuts against the upper portion of the spindle to hold the same at the proper inward inclination. The spindle D has its upper end flattened, and
said end is held within the recess g by a I pivot-pin g, the lower portion of the recess being open to. permit the spindle to swing therein.
The pad or pads may be of ordinary construction and configuration, and are provided with transverse sprin g-plates f, which are centrally perforated for the reception of the projection h of the collar H, and on each side of the spring are placed washers t 'i, the inner end of the projection It being upset to hold the collar to the spring-plate and permit rotation of the pad upon the said projection, thereby giving an essential adjustment, especially when the pad is of an oval or pear shape.- The collar H is retained upon the spindle by a set-screw k, and when said setscrew is loosened the pad can be adjusted both vertically and laterally.
By the construction hereinbefore described and shown it will be observed that the pad or pads can be adjusted to whatever position may be desired; also, that the pads can be turned or rotated upon the spindles so that they will exert a pressure upon the rupture, which pressure may be either directly inward or to the right or left.-
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide a support for truss-pads by means of which the pads could be adjustable laterally and inwardly or outwardly, as is shown in Patent No. 170,273, dated November 23, 1875; also, of the construction'shown in the patents to George W.
Bell and myself, dated November 20, 1888, and I therefore partially disclaim what is shown therein.
I claim- In combination with the band A, a padholder or casting having a slot through which the band passes, a set-screw for holding the same to the band, said casting having a depending portion with a screw-threaded opening for the reception of :1 set-screw, and a resubstantially as shown, and for the purpose 1o oess at right angles to the slot through which set forth. the band passes, and beneath the same a In testimony whereof I al'fix my signature in spindle having a flat upper portion through preseuceof two Witnesses.
