SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,917, dated November 12 1889. Application filed September 7, 1838- Serial No. 284,795- (No model.)

' Be it known that I, JOHN P. NESSLE, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented anew and Improved Candlestick, of Which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a candlestick with a weighted sliding frame having an opening for'the reception of a candle, the arrangement being such that the frame descends as the candle is consumed, the lighted end of the candle at all times maintaining a fixed position with relation to said frame, the construction of the frame being such that the melted part of a candle is turned inward toward the burning wick, whereby said melted part is prevented from running down the sides of the candle, and every particle of said candleconsumed; and it con sistsin the parts which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention. Fig 2 is a sectional detail of the candle-tube. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a transparent frame. Fig. lis a side elevation of the invention, the transparent frame being shown in dotted-lines; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the improvement when used as a lantern.
The base-plate A of the candlestick is provided with a standard A, also provided with a tubular match-box B, having a hinged lid 13, and two parallel rods 0 0, having their lower ends fixed to said plate and extending upward therefrom. A candle A is mounted 011 the standard A.
The weighted frameconsists of two plates D D, connected by a series of fixed-rods E and perforated to allow a free circulation of air. The top plate D is provided with two side projections d, and the lower plate D is also provided with two side projections d. Each of said projections is provided with an opening, and E E are two tubes connecting the two plates D D and fixed in the.respect-. ive openings aforesaid. The lower plate is provided on its under side with an outwardly H H are two spring-arms, each having its lower end fixed to the outer side of a lug G. The upper end H of each arm H is notched and bent inward at right angles to its body. Each plate D D is provided with a central opening for the reception of a candle-tube I. This tube is open at both ends, and the inner upper end thereof is provided with an inwardly-curved and sharpedged flange I. This tube isfixed in the central plate openings aforesaid, and the upper end thereof extends above the top plate D. Y The under side of the lower plate D is provided with a fixed weight D This weight is provided with an opening corresponding to the central opening in the said plate D.
rated top plate J and a bottom rim K. Said plate and rim are connected by vertical pieces K. The rectangular side openings formed by the parts J K K are provided with glass L. The upper side of the plate J is provided with two upwardly-extending short tubes L L, one on each side of said plate. Each tube L communicates with an opening in the plate to which it is fixed. The outer opposite sides of the transparent frame, extending from each tube L to the rim K are each provided with a wedge-faced plate M. The lower outer side of each plate M is provided with a wedgefaced lug N, fixed thereto.
The operation is as follows: The candle A is seated on the standard A. The weighted frame is mounted above the base A, with the rods 0 in the tubes E and the candle within the tube I, as shown in Fig. 1. The candle supports the weighted frame; but when the candle is lighted and as it is consumed the weighted frame gradually descends on the rods 0. The sharp-edged inner flange I on the tube I will force the melted part of the burning candle inward toward the. wick, thereby preventing said melted part from running over the sides of the tube I and producing the complete consumption of the candle. ' The transparent frame consists of a perfosaid standard is of sufficient length to enter the tube and hold the candle in position until the last particle thereof is consumed. hen a lantern is desired, the transparent frame shown in Fig. 3 is placed over the weighted frame and the several parts are connected as shown in Fig. 5that is to say, the rods 0 are passed through the short tubes L of the transparent frame and the respective wedgefaced side lugs N are slipped between the spring-arm II and wedge-faced plate F on the weighted frame. The inwardly bent and notched part H of each arm H serves to prevent the upward displacement of the transparent frame on the weighted frame. The transparent frame is adjustable on the weight ed frame. This adjustment or movement is limited by the parts G and H of the spring arm H.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a candlestick, the combination, with a base provided with a seat for the candle and with upwardly-extendin g rods, of a frame consisting of two apertured and spaced plates provided with a central candle-tube and with vided with upwardly-extending rods, and a weighted frame provided with openings for the reception of said rods and also provided with a flanged tube for the reception of a candle, said frame being also provided with the spring-arms H, as specified, in combination with the transparent frame provided with openings for the reception of the rods aforesaid, and also provided with lugs N, substantially as shown and described.
