UNITED STATES PATENT @Erica JOHN CONN, OF VALPARAISO, INDIANA.
Doon-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters .Patent No. 414,495, dated November 5, 1889. Application filed May 16, 1 889. Serial No. 310,931. (No model.)
To all zuil/0m t may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN CONN, a citizen of the United States', residing at Valparaiso,-in the county of Porter and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of thesame, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specific-ation, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a ver" tical longitudinal section of my improved door-check, showing it applied to a door; Fig. 2, a perspective view in detail of the toothed bar, showing it partly in broken section; and Figi 3 a perspective view of the lock-plate.
The present invention has relation to that class of door-checks for which a patent was granted to ine the 8th day of June, 1886, and numbered 343,298; and the object thereof is to improve the construct-ion of such devices, whereby they will act with greater power, less liable to become inoperative, and providing means whereby the door may be securely locked in a closed position, as found desirable, these several objects being attained by the construction, substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the door and B the door-sill, which are simply7 shown to illustrate the application of the invention, and will therefore form n part of the claim.
The door-check which constitutes my invention consists, substantially, of the box or casing C, of any preferred shape and design, either ornamental or plain, and of any suitable metal, and pivoted thereto is a pawl D, having upon its outer end a weight a., the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. The pawl D may be connected to the box or casing O in any preferred manner, said pawl engaging with the teeth h upon a vertical bar E, which carries the rubber roller F, of oval or cam shape and having a plain periphery or edge. The bar at its front side is cast with a rib c, extending longitudinally therewith, and the lower portion of this rib has teeth, as above described.
This rib c fits in a correspondiugly-formed groove d upon the inner side of the box or casing C, thereby forming'a guide for the bar E when moved vertically in the box or casing. The bar E has a channel e upon its lrear side to form a `chamber for a coil-spring G, the upper end thereof bearing against the plate or cap f, and the lower end of the spring resting upon a plate g, projecting from the base-plate H, which plate is secured to the door by screws or other well-known means. Byr this construction I am enabled to use a spring of much greater length than in my former patent, and consequen tly obtain correspondinglyincreased power, and thus render the device more effective.
The operation of the device is the same as in my former patent, and I use in connection therewith a lock-plate or keeper I, grooved upon its upper face, as shown at h, and wedge shape in longitudinal section, as shown in Fig. l. This keeper or iloclcplateis fastened to the floor by screws or any well-known and preferred means, so that when the door is closed the roller will be seated in the groove 7e and the wedge shape of the device will forni a lock to prevent the door from being opened except by raising of the bar E through the medium of the weighted pawl D.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the box or casing C, having longitudinal groove d, of the vertical bar E, having inwardlyextending cap f at its upper end, and a rib c, with its lower end toothed, said bar having a longitudinal channele, and said rib working in said groove, the base-plate H, formed near its lower end with an outwardly-extending plate g, the vertical coiled spring Gr between said plate and cap in the channel e of the bar E, and the weighted pawl D, pivoted in the casing C, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
v JOHN CONN.
