IMPROVEMENT IN HATS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,261, dated' January l2, 1864.

.T0 all whom it may concern:

Beit known that we, ROBERT B. HURD, of Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, and WILLIAM HALLADAY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hats and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specication, said drawing representing a central vertical section of a hat constructed according to our invention.

This invention consists in a hat having the crown and the portion of the body which fits the head of buckram covered with plush or other material of similar character, and the brim of felt, such a hat being especially suitableforladiesandchildrenswear,and,besides, presenting a very beautiful appearance and possessing advantages over hats made of other materials or combinations of materials, as will be hereinafter explained.

The crown A and the portion B of the body which fits the head are made of one piece of buckram, (indicated by a blue line, a a, in the drawing,) which is moistened and pressed on a block to the desired shape, and a covering, b, of plush or other material, such as is used as a material for the covering of hatbodies, the said covering being stuck to the buckram when dry by a coat-ing of what is known as hatters varnish,77 composed of an alcoholic solution of shellac. The brim C is made of one piece of' felt or felt cloth of suitable shape, which is steeped in a stiftening composed of an alcoholic solution of shellac and then formed into the required shape by pressure between dies, or by other means, and its inner margin isturned up to fit within the portion b b Aof the body, to enable it when` dry and'stiff to be seWed or otherwise united strongly to the body.` After the brim and body have been sewedv together or otherwise united the joint is covered and concealed by a band of ribbon or other material.

The brim may have the felt left bare, or have its exterior covered or partly covered with velvet or other material by sewing on the same.

This hat, besides presenting a novel and beautiful appearance, is much lighter than the plush-covered hats commonly made, in which the plush is placed on a basis of felt, and the plain felt brim is capable of being 'curved into fanciful forms, which a plush-covered brim does not admit of What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A hat composed of buckram covered with plush or its equivalent, and Ibrim of felt, the Whole combined and constructed substantially as herein described.
