SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,933, dated October 1, 1889. Application filed May 31, 1889. Serial No. 312,684. (No model.)

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD T. RYAN, a citizen of the nited States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful improvement in CurlingCombs, of which the following is a specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a view in longitudinal section of the handle and head of the comb, showing its construction and the arrangement and operation of the internal parts. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, showing the position and form of the slot in the handle, through which the internal parts are operated.

Similar letters refer to similar parts in both views.

a represents a tube provided with the teeth c, and having as a handle, all of which are'preferably cast in one piece from some suitable metal. s is a spiral spring adapted to inclose the rod d and to move freely inside of the handle D, its front end bearing against the shoulder' g and its rear end against the stud e. The block n is adapted to be screwed or soldered into the end of the handle b after the rod d and springl s have been inserted.

the tube b of largery diameter The operation of the device is as follows: The rod 'd is protruded from the tube d by means of the stud e, which is pushed forward and into the notch h, where it is held. The end of the rod d is then heated by some convenient means-such as in a gas-flame or over a lamp-when the stud e is released from the notch 7L and the expansion of the spring' S retracts the rod CZ entirely within the tube a, which is heated by the saine. The imple-` ment is now ready for use as a curling-comb.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination, with a hollow handle or bodyhaving the co1nbteeth upon one end, of a spring-retracted curling or heating iron adapted to normally lie concealed within said handle.

2. A curling-comb consisting of the hollow tube a, handle b, formed integral therewith, the slot m, having notch h in its forward end, the spring-retracted curling or heating iron d, provided with the stud e, for engagement with the notch h, to hold the curling-iron in its projected position when desired, substantially as described.
