SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 410,566, dated September 3, 1839. Application filed April 13, 1889. Serial No. 807,135- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN II. KEYSER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners for Lighting, Cooking, and Heating Purposes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to gas-burners adapted for burning ordinary coal or natural gas without requiring the admixture with it of air before its passage into the supply-pipe; and it consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed, whereby the gas is controlled, regulated, heated, and distributed in a manner to be most effective for lighting, cooking, and heating purposes.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view and partial section of my improved gas-burner. In this view nearly half of the circular plate, gas-heating reservoir, and flame regulators or eveners are shown in full, and the reservoir, burner-arms, supply distributing pipe, and wire-gauze regulating, controlling, and gas-distributing cylinder are shown in horizontal section. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the improved burner complete, and Fig. 3 is a vertical detail section in the line a: 00 of Fig. 1.
A in the drawings represents a gas-receiving cylindrical reservoir closed at top and bottom, except at the point where the gas-supply pipe 13 is inserted into it. From about midway of the height of this reservoir a series of radial hollow arms in form of gas-pipe tubes are extended, said hollow arms being at their inner ends in communication with the interior of the reservoir and at their outer ends closed or plugged and connected with a circular ring a.
Above the hollow arms, about midway of the height of the gas-receiving reservoir, a circular burner-plate C is arranged, and the same attached to the burner-casting at to", outside the reservoir, thus constituting a portion of the burner, instead of being attached to a furnace or other independent structure.
Along the hollow arms, on top and centrally thereof, a series of gas-jet passages b is provided for the escape and burning of the gas from the arms, said passages being in channels of the said arms and guarded against win d-blasts by the side Walls of said channels. The said side Walls of the channels also form rests for the plateC when it is fastened in position as shown, and above these passages passages c are formed in the plate C.
On each side and at the ends of said passages inclined Wind-guard strips (Z are constructed or applied, so that there is a central flame-space f between the side strips, as shown in Fig. in. These strips insure a uniform supply of air in sheets at the sides and ends of the flame and steadiness of the burning of the flame, they causing the gas to burn in unbroken sheets above the slits.
The reservoir A and arms D may be cast 011 a sand core in one piece, while the plate 0 may be cast in one piece or quarter-sections separate from the arms and reservoir, and suitably fastened to the outer ends of the arms and to the reservoir.
Within the reservoir A a pipe B, having a perforated cap or upper end and forming an extension of the gas-supply pipe B, is applied. This pipe extends up into the upper section we of the reservoir, A beyond the circular plate C, and has numerous gas-distributing holes 9 in its periphery, as well as in its capped upper end, and around this perforated extension is applied a wire-gauze cylinder E, having its upper end capped with wiregauze and its lower end closed by the solid plate a, forming the lower head or end of the cylindrical reservoir A. This wire-gauze cylinder is higher than the perforated extension-pipe B, but not as high as the reservoir A, and it is of greater diameter than the said extensionpipe 13 and of less diameter than the said reservoir, and thusa gas-chamber his formed between said pipe B and the wire-gauze cylinder, both above and around it, also a gaschamber h between the Wire-gauze cylinder and the reservoir, as shown. The extensionpipe B serves for distributing the gas freely into the wire-gauze cylinder, and the Wire gauze cylinder serves, by reason of its finer mesh or passages, for controlling and regulating the distribution of the gas into the reservoir, and therefrom into the burner-arms and to the gas-jets and wind-guarded passages of the circular plate 0 in such a manner that a brilliant, white, and powerful flame is secured and maintained from common coal-gas without the use of Bunsen burners or the admixture of air with such gas before its passage into the supply-pipe.
By the construction of the reservoir A with its upper section on above the circular plate, and the surrounding of this portion with the numerous rising flames from the hollow burner-arms, the gas in the reservoir is highly heated, and thereby greatly rarefied 0r volatilized, and consequently is caused to burn with a more intense and brighter light at the jet-passages and flame-spaces. The gas in the reservoir is also heated by conduction through the circular plate 0, which is connected to the reservoir, as shown and hereinbefore described. The pressure of the gas after entering the reservoir and becoming heated is rendered more uniform by reason of its filling the upper section m and exerting a uniform downward bodily pressure laterally through the hollow burner-arms D.
What I claim as my invention is l. The reservoir A, having hollow burnerarms D, of tubular form, about midway of its height and in communication at their inner ends with its interior and closed at their outer ends and connected to a circular ring a, in combination with a plate having burner-passages and a radially-slitted burner-plate attached to the casting of the gas-burner, and a supply-pipe B, having extension-pipe B',perforated along its periphery and terminating above the burner-arms in the portion on of the reservoir, substantially as described.
2. In a gas-burner, the combination of the reservoir A, having burner-arms D, of tubular form, about midway of its height and in communication at their inner ends with its interior and closed at their outer ends and connected to a circular ring a, radially-slitted burner-plate attached to the casting of the gas-burner, a supply-pipe B, having exten sionpipe B, perforated along its periphery and terminating above the burner-arms in the portion m of the reservoir, and the finelyperforated or wire-gauze cylinder E, completely inclosing the perforated extension-- pipe B, and having a gas-chamber between the inner surface of the reservoir A and the outer surface of the wire-gauze cylinder, substantially as described.
3. In a gas-burner, in combination, the reservoir A, hollow burner-arms D between its ends, the plate 0, immediately above said burner-arms and provided with burner-passages, the supply-pipe B, perforated extension-pipe B, and wire-gauze cylinder E, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4:. In a gas-burner, in combination, the reservoir A, supply-pipe B, perforated extensionpipe B, wire-gauze cylinder E, plate C, having burner-passages, inclined wind-guards d, and hollow burner arms D, substantially as described.
5. In a gas-burner, in combination,the reservoir A, supply-pipe B, hollow arms D, plate 0, having burner-passages attached to the casting of the gasfburner, and inclined windguillds d, substantially as described.
