W. N. PERKINS.
WINDOW BLIND 0R SHUTTER. No. 410,441. Patented Sept. 3, 1889.
WITNESSES INVENTOK N s. How-Lithographer, Wmhinglon n c .PETER UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM N. PERKINS, OF CLEVELAND, OIIIO.
WINDOW BLIND OR SHUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,441, dated September 3, 1889.
Application filed October 18, 1886. Serial No. 216,509. (No model.)
To to whom it may concern:
Be it-known that I, \VILLIAM N. PERKINS, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in \Vindow Blinds or Shutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and complete description thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in the means employed for connecting the slats together and for opening and closing them. The mechanism for the purpose consists of a rod or strip of plate or wire with a series of loops or eyelets adapted to the staples in the slats, and so loosely connected as to open or close the said slats more or less, as the nature of the case may require.
It is well known that in the ordinary way of connecting the slats for operation a wood rod is used in which are inserted staples to connect with the staples in the slats, and that the staples by use in operating the slats become loose and draw out both from the slats and the wood rod, so that more or less of the slats are not moved in opening and closing adjoining ones, which both disfigures the appearance of the blinds and also either excludes light or admits more than is desired. Further, the wood rod is often so broken as to be inoperative for the purpose designed. It is the purpose of said improvement to avoid the said objections resultant from the usual means employed for operating window-blind slats.
For a more full and complete description of the said invention reference will be had to the following specification, and to the annexed drawing, making part thereof.
The drawing represents a perspective view of a window blind or shutter having movable slats with the improvement connected therewith.
The slats A are pix oted in side pieces of. the frame B at each end, as indicated at C, and in the same way at the opposite end. To each slat is fastened a staple D by driving it into the slat or otherwise attaching it. lonneeted to the staples is a wire rod E, on which are formed a series of loops E to correspond to the number of slats. These loops F link into the staples, as seen in the drawing.
In making this connection of the rod with the slats the rod, having loops formed thereon by any suitable means, is connected with the slats by passing a staple through the loop and then forcing the staple into the edge of the slat. In this way the rod is connected to each of the slats until all of them are connected to the rod.
The rod, being of melal, can be of su fficient strength as not to bend or break in use, which will insure a concerted movement of the slats uniformly at all times.
IVhatI claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a window-blind, the combination, with pivoted slats A, having staples 1) arranged in a line at right angles to the slats, of the wire E, formed with loops F, formed all on one side of the wire, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signatu re in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM N. PERKINS.
