UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER KAISER, OF BERLIN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO LUDVIG MAROK- VALD, OF SAME PLACE.
MECHANISlVl FOR CONVERTING MOTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,149, dated August 13, 1889.
Application filed March '7, 1888. Serial No. 266,423. (No model.) Patented in Germany July 5, 1887, No. 42,372, and in France July 30,1887, N0.1e5,o89.
To all whom it may concern: Similar letters of reference indicate corre- Be it known that 1, ALEXANDER KAISER, a sponding parts. o
citizen of Switzerland, and a resident of the The cog-wheel A is rigidly mounted on the city of Berlin, German Empire, have invented arbor a and engages a pinion D on the sec- 5 certain new and useful Improvements in ond-hand arbor t of a watch or clock. The Mechanisms for OonvertingMotion, (for which cog-wheel B, provided with an extended hub Letters Patent have heretofore been granted B, is mounted loosely on the arbor a and 55 to me in Germany, No. 42,372, dated July 5, engages a pinion E, rigidly mounted on the 1887, and in France, No. 185,089, dated July arbor b. The coiled spring O is secured on ro 30, 1887,) of which the following` is a specifi- .the hub B of the wheel B and to a pin Hof cat-ion. t the wheel A, said pin projecting between the The object of this invention is to provide spokes of the wheel B; but, if desired, said 6o new and improved mechanism forconverting spring can be secured in any other suitable continuous rotary motion into intermittent manner to the wheel A. The wheels are rotary motion, and this mechanism is speturned in the direction of the arrows shown cially adapted for registering, advertising, or in Figs. 2 and 4 by a wheel F, part of which like devices. is shown in Fig. 1, and which engages a pin- 65 The invention consists in the combination, ion E', iiXed on the arbor d. with the arbor, of a fixed and a loose wheel If, for example, the number of teeth in the` 2o on the same, a spring connecting the IiXed wheel A is sixty, and in the wheel B sixtyand loose wheel, an additional arbor having iive, and in the pinion D twelve, and in the two pinions, with one of which the iixed pinion E six, the wheel A will have moved or 7o wheel engages, the loose wheel engaging with rotated the distance oc', Fig. 2, for one rotathe other, part of vthe teeth of the loose wheel tion of the arbor t, whereas the wheel B has or its pinion being broken out, and the proonly rotated the distance y', Fig. 4, in the portion of speed of the xed wheel to its pinsaine time, so that the wheel A will be in adion and the loose wheel to its pinion being Vance of the wheel B the difference between such that the speed of rotation of the loose the distances or. and y. As the wheel A,with wheel during thetime of its rotation is less which one end of the spring C is connected, 3o than that of the iiXed wheel. travels faster than the wheel B, with the hub The invention also consists in the construcof which the other end of the spring is contion and combination of parts and details, as nected, it follows that the said spring is 8o will be fully described and set forth hereinbrought in tension. If a number of succesafter, and finally pointed out in the claims. sive teeth have been out out of the riln of 3 5 In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is the wheel B, as lshown in Eig. 4, the length of a vertical transverse sectional view of my said blank part of the rim of the wheel correimproved mechanism for converting motion. sponding to the difference between the dis- Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional View on the line a' tances m and y', it follows that when the Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional space the spring C, which has been brought view on the same plane, showing a modiiied in tension, as stated, throws the wheel B forconstruction. -Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse ward suddenly a distance equal to the differ- 9o sectionalview of a watch provided with my ence between the distances 0c and y-that is, improved mechanism for converting motion. the wheel B catches up to the wheel A. The 45 Fig. 6 is a rear view of the movement. Fig. motion of the wheel B and its hub B will be 7 is a view of the face of the movement bean intermittent one, and the said intermithind the dial. Fig. 8 is a face View of the tent motion from the hub B can be trans- 95 dial on a smaller scale. mitted to other parts by 'means of the cogwheel G. The wheel l? is arrested after it has made this sudden movement by the teeth of the wheel I3 striking against the teeth of the pinion E, as shown in Fig. Ji. It desired, one tooth may be omitted from the pinion E, as shown in Fig. 3, and in that case there is no need of cutting out any ot the teeth of the wheel B. The wheel B is then thrown forward by the spring when the blank part of the pinion passes the teeth ot the Wheel. The wheel l; is checked by the pin ll', as shown in Fig. 3.
This device has the advantage that no paivls have ,to be disengaged and the regular movement of the clock-work is not interfered with.
Figs. 5, (5, 7, and S shoiv my improved device for converting motion applied to a watch provided with numbers indicating hours and minntes,whicl1 numbers are shifted every hour and minute, respectively.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettezs Iatent- 1. The mechanical movement for converting rotary motion into intermittent rotary motion, consistingol" an arbor, two cog-wheels mounted on the same, one iixed and the' other loose, a spring connecting the two cogwheels, and two pinions fixed on an arbor and engaging, respectively, with the fixed and loose cog-wheel, the proportion of the teeth of the iixed wheel to its pinion and the relation of the teeth of the loose wheel to its pinion being such that the speed of rotation of the loose cog-Wheel during the time the same is engaged with its pinion is different from the speed ot the fixed cog-Wheel, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with an arbor (L, of the cog-whcel A, mounted rigidly on the same, the cog-Wheel B, mounted loosely on the arbor and having the hub l', the spring (5,0011- nected with the hub B and with the wheel A, the cog-Wheel G on the hub B, the pinion F on the arbor a, the pinion E, engaging With the cog-wheel B, and the pinion D, en gaging with the cog-Wheel A, some of the teeth of the cog-wheel B being broken ont, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence otl two subscribing witnesses! ALE. 'AN DER KAISER. Witnesses:
il. Roi, L. MARCKWALD.
