SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,340, dated July 23, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, ROBERT FARIES, of the city of Decatur, county of Macon, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in Display-Rack s, oi. which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of an'arm having a curved end passing through an eye in a fixed support, the said arm being used singly or in sets variously arranged, as will hereinafter appear.

In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a single arm supported from a wall-bracket. Fig. 2 represents an arm supported on a pod estal and provided with auxiliary arms held in collars that may be either fixed or movable on the main arm. Fig. 3 indicates the manner of constructing racks with arms, crossrods, and shelves; and Fig. 4 shows the joint with the eye in cross-section.

The arm is indicated by reference-letter a, the curved portion by a, the support by b, and the eye by b. In Fig. 3 rods supported by auxiliary arms on a pair of main arms are indicated by letter 0, and a shelf similarly supported is shown at d. slightly larger than the arm, so that the curved portion of the arm may be adjusted longitudin ally therein, in which case the arm will swing radially in a vertical plane, as indicated by the positions shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.. In addition to this motion, the arm may be swung sidewise in its bearing, thus permitting lateral as well as vertical adjustment, and it is held, when adjusted, by its own weight and the weight of its load, which cramps the curved portion in the eye and develops enough friction to prevent side motion. To adj ust the device vertically,itis only necessary to sustain the weight of the arm and its load, when the curved portion may be readily moved through the eye. To adjust laterally, the device is simply swung from side to side.

Set-screws are shown in the bearings of the arms; but they are not ordinarily used. WVhen some particular position is to be long maintained, it may be well, as an extra precaution, to set the screws against the arms.

As shown in the drawings, the device may be used singly or in sets variously arranged, and the bracket or base that forms the support may be vertical, horizontal, or any intermediate angle. Supports may be formed entirely of shelves or of rods supported as shown, and in case a show-window is to be decorated a main stand may be used, together with arms, single or compound, supported in brackets secured to the walls.
