Description
NTTED STATES J. n. PLANK, or rULAsKi, iowa.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
Specilcatiou forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,70% dated November 24,
-llo alb' whom it may concern:
' Beit known that I, J. H. PLANK, ol' Pulaski, in the county of Davis and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specitication, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of apump embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a fragment of the pump.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Thisinvention relates to that class of singlebarrel pumps in which the water is raised by two plungers which move alternately' in opposite directions, and thus cause the water to discharge in a continuous stream.
The invention consists of twov plungers tted to work up and down in a single barrel or cylinder, in combina-tion with two leversot' the first and second order, fulerumed to posts which rise from two opposite sides ofthe barrel or cylinder, said levers being connected together by a pin which projects from the side of one ot' the levers and works in a slot in the other in such a manner that when one lever is moved up or down,a corresponding movement in a reverse direction is impartedto the other, whereby the two plungers are caused to alternately approach to and recede from each other, and thus effect thc desired object, all as will be hereinafter fully explained.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand the same,'I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents the barrel or cylinder of a pump, which may be constructed of wood, metal, or of other suitable material.
B B are two plungers, of similar form and dimensions, having a central aperture passing through them, which is covered by an ordinary Hap-valve.
(I C are two levers of the first and second class, respectively. These levers are fulcrumed by pins to posts DD, which rise from two opposite sides of the pump, barrel, or
cylinder A. The posts D D, if the pump be made of wood, may be attached by screws or bolts, and if made of cast metal they may be cast nith and form a part of the cylinder. The lever C has a transverse slot, b, cut through it at its forward end to receive a pin, a, which projects from the lever C, whereby the two levers are connected together and receive motion one from the other. .lhe plungers are rigidly attached to the lower end of two rods, E E, which are connected at their upper ends by pins c c with the levers C C, respectively, a hole being formed in the upper plunger between the central aperture and exterior for the rod of the lower plunger to work through. Tile water raised bythe action of the plungers enters the cylinder A through an opening, c, iu the bottom, and it escapes through a nozzle or spout, I.
fis a flap check-valve, covering the opening e in the bottom ofthe pun'ip-cylinder.
It will be obvious from the-foregoing description that if the lever (l be moved up or down, a corresponding movement in a contrary direction will be given to the lever C',
so that when the pumpis at work the two plungers alternately approach to and recede from each other, and consequently one of them is always lifting and forcing water, thus keeping up a continuousdischarge from the nozzle. By removing the upper plunger from the bar rel and putting the lever G in place of the iever C', a single-acting pump is produced which possesses all ot' the advantages ot' the common single-acting cylimler-pumpf In case either of the plungers,t'rom any cause whatever, fail to work, and have to be removed to be repaired, the remaining plunger can be used alone.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The levers C and C', of thc first and second order, respectively, fulcrumed to posts D D and connected together by a pin, a, and slot I), in combination with the rods E E and plurr gers B B, when arranged to operate in the manner andl for the purpose described.
