UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM BREDE, OF IIAMAKUA, HAWAII.
POCKET-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,055, dated July 16, 1889.
Application filed August 22, 1888. Serial No. 283,397. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM BREDE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Hamakua, Island of Hawaii, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Pocket-Knives, of which the following is a specification.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved pocket-knife, showing one side of the handle removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing one of the slides withdrawn from the end of the handle. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the knife with one-half of the handle removed, and Fig. I is a perspective view of one of the slides.
The object of my invention is to combine a Whetstone with a pocket-knife in such a way that the stone may be readily removed from the knife and placed in the position of use.
My invention consists of a knife having at one side of the handle-lining a chamber for receiving a Whetstone, the Whetstone being attached to the inner surface of one of the halves of the handle.
It also further consists in the combination, with the handle, of slides provided with slot bolt-holes adapted to engage studs proj ectin from the body of the knife.
The handle A is provided with the usual lining (t a and with one fixed cheek-piece I). In place of the opposite cheek-piece of the handle a chambered plate 0, of metal or other suitable material, is placed against thelining c. The rives at the ends of the handle are prolonged beyond the chambered plate c, having studs (Z d, which are provided in opposite sides with rectangular notches e, for receiving the fastening-slide.
The opposite cheek-piece Z) is provided with a lining to which is attached a Whetstone B. The ends of the cheek-piece I) are projected to receive the studs (Z d, and they are also mortised to receive slides f f, said slides being provided with slots g, which are adapted to receive the necks of the studs. The ends of the slides project beyond the bolsters 71., and are each provided with a neck t', to facilitate the withdrawal of the slide by the fingernail.
\Vhen the cheek-piece Z) is in place on the knife-handle, the Whetstone B is contained by the chamber of the plate 0, and the slides ff are pushed into the ends of the cheekpiece, so as to engage the studs d (1, said slides being received in the notches e of the studs.
\Vhen it is desired to remove the whetstone 1 for use, the slides f f are drawn out beyond the studs (Z d, as shown in Fig. 2, when the cheek-piece Z), together with the Whetstone 13, may be removed, and the latter may be used in the ordinary way.
The withdrawal of the slides f f from the handle is prevented by lugs j, projecting from opposite sides thereof, said lugs being engaged by shoulders 70 in the bolsters h.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a pocket-knife, the combination, with the cheek-piece b, of linings a. a ,the chambered plate 0, the cheek-piece I), having the whetstone 1; attached to its inner sideand adapted to enter the chamber of the plate 0, and means for connecting said cheek-piece and handle, substantially as shown and described.
2. A pocket-knife provided with a chambered plate a, notched studs (Z d, the apertured cheek-piece I), provided with slotted slides f f, adapted to engage the studs (1 d, and the Whetstone B, attached to the cheekpiece I) and adapted to be received in the chambered plate 0, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claimthe foregoing as
