UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICEQ WVILLIAM EYNON AND XVILLIAM SEAMAN, OF \VILMINGTON, DELAY'VARE.
ROLL FOR ROLLING HORSESHOE-BLANKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,711, dated July 9, 1889. Application filed December 10, 1888. Serial No. 293,108. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM EYN ON and WILLIAM SEAMAN, both citizens of the United States, and residents of WVilmington, New Castle county, Delaware, have invented certain Improvements in Mills for Rolling l-Iorseshoe-Blanks, of which the following is a specification'.
The object of our invention is to so construct a mill for rolling horseshoe-blanks that the continuous bar fed into the mill will be rolled into the proper shape for the blanks and severed, so that the blanks issuing from the mill can pass directly to the bending-ma chine without any further reheating. This object we attain in .the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 isa side view, partly in section, of a horseshoe-blank-rolling machine constructed in accordance with our invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are face views, respectively, of the creasing and finishing rolls of the machine; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view illustrating the action of the mill.
In Fig. 1, A represents the frame or housing of the mill, having suitable guides for the boxes a of the creasing-rolls B and finishingrolls D and for the boxes of lower or carrying rolls B and D, operating in conjunction with said creasing and finishing rolls, respectively, the upper boxes being acted upon by the usual adj usting-screws l) and the lower boxes being supported by wedge-blocks cl, while bet-ween the'two pairs of rolls is a box or trough F, which serves to support and guide the bar in its passage from one pair of rolls to the other. The upper or creasing roll B has in the present instance two sets of creasing ribs or projectionsff', of the usual character, so that it forms two blanks on each rotation of the roll, and between these .two sets of creasing-ribs are projecting fins or blades 9, of such character that they will almost, but not quite, sever the bar between the successive blanks or creased portions.
The rolls D D of the mill provide a pass of the usual form for the finishing of the creased bar; but the rolls D D are so proportioned or are so driven in respect to the rolls B B as to have a slightly greater surface speed than said rolls B B, so that that :part of the bar between the two sets of rolls It will be evident that in carrying out our invention the creasing-roll may be provided with creasing ribs or projections of such character as to produce but one blank on each rofation of the roll, in which case but one fin or projection g need be formed on said roll, or the roll may have more than two sets of creasing projections and more than two severingfins, if desired.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, in a mill for rolling horseshoe-blanks, of the creasing-rolls having one or more fins or proj ectio'fis for transversely indenting the bar so as to partially sever the same, and finishing-rolls driven at slightly greater surface speed than the creasing-rolls,
so as to impart a slight draft to the bar and tear it apart at the indented portions, all substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the creasing-rolls having one or more indenting-fins for partially severing the bar, the finishing-rolls driven at a great-er surface speed than the creasing-rolls, so as to impart draft to the bar and pull it apart at the indentations, and a WVM. EYNON. M. SEAMAN.
