WATER HEATER AND CONDENSER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 406,265, dated July 2, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that 1, JAMES E. ORAWLEY, of \Vhitewater, in the county of VValwort-h and in the State of W'isconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vater Heaters and Condensers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a combined water heater and condenser; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combi nation of parts, to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of awater heater and condenser constructed according to ,my invention; and Fig. 2, a transverse section on line 2 2, Fig. 1.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a water-tank separated by a partition B from a condensing-chamber C, said tank and condensing-chamberbeing parts ofa single shell that is preferably of cylindrical form. The tank portion A of the shell is provided with a water-inlet D, and the condensingchamber has an outlet E for exhaust-steam. On the top of the shell I arrange a bracket F, and to this bracket 1 journal a pulley G, over which is run a cord H, the inner end of the latter being passed through an opening in said shell to extend down into the tank A and connect with a float I, while the outer end of said cord runs through an eye J and is attached to a counter-weight K.
A longitudinal pipe L passes through the tank A into the condensing-chamber C, said pipe being designed for connection with the exhaust of a steam-engine. Fitted to the tank A at or near its bottom is a pipe M that connects with the longitudinal steam-pipe L, and I provide the pipe M with a valve N.
The condensing-chamber C has an overflowoutlet 0, and is provided with a depending portion P, having a draw-off cock Q, and arranged within said condensing-chamber to extend down into its depending portion is a tube R. A pipe S, for communication with a boiler-pump or injector, enters the depending portion P of the condensing-chamber O, and is provided with a bend T that extends up a certain distance into the tube R. K
In the operation of my invention the exhaust-steam from an engine is bein gconstantly passed through the pipe L, and consequently the water in the tankAis heated to a certain degree. The steam and water of condensation enter the chamber 0, where an additional amount of condensation takes place and the remaining steam passes out through the exhaust-outlet E. The water of condensation accumulates in the depending portion of the chamber 0, and after it rises to the height of the pipe-bend T it finds its Way through the latter and the pipe S to the boiler-pump or inj ectorbelonging to the steam-engine to which my device may be connected; but in case said water of condensation accumulates faster than it can be utilized it will run off through the overflow-outlet 0, thereby preventing any backing up toward the engine.
The tube R prevents surface water from entering the pipe-bend T, and therefore the oil and' scum that floats to the surface of the accumulated water of condensation cannot mingle with the water that flows through the pipe S to the boiler-pump or injector.
WVh'en there is not enough Water of condensation to supply the boiler-pump or injector, I open the valve N, and thereby allow the water in the tank A to escape through the pipe M and enter the pipe L, where it meets the current of steam that is constantly passing through the latter pipe and is forced into the condensing-chamber O, to be drawn off in the manner above described.
The steam heats the water passed through pipe L to averyhigh temperature, and by getting it so hot the lime, magnesia, and other impurities are separated therefrom and by gravity sink to the bottom of the depending portion P of the condensing-chamber, to be drawn off through the cock Q.
By the construction abovedescribed I free the water from all impurities prior to its entrance into the boiler feed pipe and thereby prevent incrustation of the boiler, while at the same time said water is at a high temperature at the time it enters the boiler, and thereby I effect a saving in the cost of fuel for the boiler-furnace. By means of the float I and its counterweight K the depth of the water in the tank can be definitely ascertained, and in case the water gets too low a new supply can be pumped in through the inlet-opening D in said tank.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A shell divided into a Water-tank and condensing-ehamber, a tube arranged within the condensing chamber, a steam pipe ex tended through the Water-tank to enter said condensing-ohamber, a pipe connecting said water-tank and steam-pipe, a boiler feed-pipe connected to the eondensing-chamber, and a bend on the latter pipe extended up into said tube, substantially as set forth.
2. A shell provided with a Water-inlet, an exhaust-steam outlet and a partition dividing it into a Water-tank and eon(lensing-chamber, a tube arranged within the condensing-chamber, a steam-pipe extended through the Watertank to enter said con(lensing-chamber, a pipe connecting said Water-tank and steam-pipe,a
boiler feed-pipe arranged to enter said tube, and means, substantially as described, for indicating the depth of water in said tank, as set forth.
A shell divided into a Water-tank and con(lensing-chamber, a tube arranged Within the condensing chamber, a steam pipe extended through the water-tank to enter said condensing-chamber, a pipe connecting said Water-tank and steam-pipe, and a boiler feedpipe arranged to enter the tube, substantially as set forth.
