Description

(No Model.)
T. T. H. HARWOOD.
PACKAGE FASTENER.
No. 405,775. Patented June 25, 1889.
N. vans. Phm-mno n nur. Washington, a. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
. THOMAS T. HUNTER HARIVOOD, OF ROCKPORT, MASSACHUSETTS.
PAC KAG E-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,775, dated June 25, 1889.
Application filed March 11, 1889. Serial No. 302,811. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS T. HUNTER HARWooD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rockport, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Package-Fasteners, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvementsin package-fasteners for the purpose of providing a ready means for tying bundles, packages, papers, notes, books, &c.; and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a plan view of the metal blank from which the fastener is made. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the finished fastener, showing the cord in position when the bundle or package is tied. Fig. 3 represents a crosssection on the line a as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a modified formof the fastener-blank; and Fig. 5 represents, in plan view and longitudinal section, a finished fastener made from the blank shown in Fig. 4. Figs. 6 and 7 represent perspective views showing bundles, packages, or similar articles tied together by my improved device.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
In making my invention, I cut out from sheet metal a blank a, which may be made of any suitable shape or form-such as, for instance, circular, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 6, or rectangular or oval, as shown in Figs. at, 5, and 7, or of any other suitable form, as may be desired.
Through said blank near its edgeI make a perforation b, to which one end of the cord 0 is suitably secured, preferably by making a knot on the end of said cord and passing the latter through said perforation, or it may be tied or otherwise secured without departing from the essence of my invention.
The blank (4 is slittcd at d d, and the ends of such slitted portions are bent upward in the form of cleats or projections (l (1, around which the free end of the fastening-cord c is bent after being passed around the package G, as shown in the drawings, and thus fastened without the need of tying. In this manner a bundle, box, or package, or similar article can be held together by passing the cord around it in, one direction only, as shown in Figs. 5 and 7.
For the purpose of tying a bundle, package, &c., in cross directions, as shown in Fig. 6, I make slits e and f in the blank a, for the formation of the respective lips, guides, or projections e and f, (shown in Figs. 2, 3, and (3,) and when it is desired to fasten the package in cross directions the plate a is laid about midway on top of such package, and the cord is carried once around it, then laid under the lips or projections e f, and .then put around the package crosswise to the first direction and finally bent around and secured in a suitable manner to the cleats or projections (Z (l, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6.
The device is very simple, light, cheap, and durable, and serves as a ready means for inclosing and securing packages or other articles without the need of tying knots in the cord, and consequently the package can be untied in a quick manner, whenever so re quired, without untying knots or cutting the cord.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim The improved fastening device, as described, consisting of the plate a, having made in one piece with it the cleats or projections (Z (I, combined with the cord 0, secured to said plate, substantially in a manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 6th day of March, A. D. 1889.
THOMAS T. HUNTER HARWOOD.
