Definitions
- This invention relates to combination-tools, and has for its object the provision of a tool that can be used as a hammer, a hatchet, a wire-cutter, a pair of pinchers, a pair of tongs or pliers, and a saw-set. Any one of these tools will perform its work as efficiently as a tool especially constructed for the particular kind of work. By having these several tools combined in one work requiring the use of two or more of the tools can be performed with greater dispatch than if a separate tool be employed for each kind of work, because there need be no delay arising from changing tools and perhaps looking for a misplaced tool, which causes vexation, added to the loss of time.
- This tool is especially designed for domestic use and for farmers or those engaged in the construction of wire fences, as it combines all the requisites necessary for such work, providing a tool for trimming the fence-posts, driving the nails or staples, cutting the wire, twisting the ends of wires together, and a tool for extracting the nails or staples.

In no single tool heretofore constructed is embodied the tools disposed in the manner proposed by me, and which hereinafter will be more particularly described and claimed.

Description
A. FRUMMI-NG.
' COMBINATION TOOL.
Patented June 11,- 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST FRGMMING, OF HANOVER, KANSAS.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,156, dated June 11, 1889.
Application filed August 8, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST FRoMMINe, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hanover, in the county of lVashington and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to combination-tools, and has for its object the provision of a tool that can be used as a hammer, a hatchet, a wire-cutter, a pair of pinchers, a pair of tongs or pliers, and a saw-set. This tool is especially designed for domestic use and for farmers or those engaged in the construction of wire fences, as it combines all the requisites necessary for such work, providing a tool for trimming the fence-posts, driving the nails or staples, cutting the wire, twisting the ends of wires together, and a tool for extracting the nails or staples. Broadly speaking, a tool of this nature is not wholly new, but a tool of my specific construction, having its component parts arranged in the particular manner proposed by me and shown in the drawings, is new. In no single tool heretofore constructed is embodied the tools disposed in the manner proposed by me, and which hereinafter will be more particularly described and claimed. p
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective $erial No. 282,201. (No model.)
View of a tool of my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the upper end of the lever, having the pole or hammer; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the upper end of the lever, having the blade or hatchet; and Fig. 4, a section on the line X X of Fig. 1, looking down or in the direction of the arrow, showing the levers open.
The tool is composed of the two levers A and B, which are pivoted together near their upper ends by the bolt 0. The upper ends of the levers curve to form the jaws D D, which comprise the pinchers. The pole or hammer E projects from the jaw D a little above the pivotal connection of the two levers, and the blade or hatchet F extends from the jaw D in an opposite direction to the pole or hammer E. The lever A is provided with a hub a and the lever B with a corresponding hub Z). These two hubs a and Z) are placed alongside of one another and are held together by the bolt 0. The hub a is onlyhalf the thickness of the lever and the jaw bordering 011 the said hub, and the hub bis also only half the thickness of the lever and the jaw, so that the sides of the hubs will come flush with the sides of the levers when the levers are placed together. The hubs a and b have slots or grooves m and m, respectively, formed obliquely across their ends, which form cutting-edges 011 the inner sides of the hubs. The oblique direction of the grooves obtains a sharper edge than if they extended parallel with the axis or bolt 0 of the levers. The levers are brought close together on their inner faces at G to form the jaws g g of the tongs or pliers. The saw-set is obtained by the notch H in the blade F.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The herein described combination tool,
composed of the levers A and B, having the recessed hubs a and b, which hubs are pivoted together and have oblique grooves to form a wire-cutting device, the outer ends of the levers being curved to form the jaws D and D, and the inner portions of the levers bor- In testimony whereof I affix my signature (lering on the hubs being brought close toin presence of two Witnesses. gether to form the jaws g and g, the lever A AUGUST FROMMING having the blade F, which is provided with the saw-set H, and the lever B having the Witnesses:
pole or hammer E, substantially as described, EDWARD BINOK, for the purpose specified. F. A. MEoKEL.
