UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE KNIGHT, OE PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM R. LANE & OO., OF SAME PLACE.
ORNAMENTAL RING FOR JEWELRY.
SPECIFICATION forming part f Letters Patent NO. 404,093, (lated May 28, 1889.
Application filed October 27, 1888. Serial No. 289,331. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. KNIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement* in' Ornamental Rings for Jewelry, of which' the following is a specification.
The obj ect of my invention is to produce a raised or thickened edge on a jointless orna- Io mental ring having inner and outer plated surfaces which are turned into contact one with the other to cover the base metal at the edge of the ring; and it consists in anV ornamental ring which maybe formed either from a single seamless tube having exterior and interior plating or from two or more concentrically-arranged seamless tubes, (in which latter case the outer tube is provided with an exterior plated surface and the inner tube 2o with an interior plated surface,) and having thickened edges formed by an outwardlyturned thinned portion or flange which carries the inner plating outwardly and back against the surface of the outer plating over the 'edge of the ring and conceals the base metal at the edge between the inner and outer plated surfaces.
Figure 1 represents an axial section of a seamless tube provided with an exterior and Fig. 2 represents the same with a portion of its periphery cut away to form a thinned end or flange for turning outwardly and back against the outer surface to form the thickened edge of the ring. Fig. 3
. 3 5 represents the thinned iianges as turned outwardly and back, so that the plating of the same will rest against the plated outer sul# face of the tube. Fig. 4 represents the ring as provided with angularly-shaped thickened edges formed from the outwardly and backwardly turned flanges. Fig. 5 represents a seamless tube formed of concentric tubes, the outer and inner tubes being seamless and provided with outer and inner plating, respectively, the said tube being adapted to form j ointless rings embodying my invention.
In the accompanying drawings, A, Fig. l, represents a seamless tube, which is provided with an outer plated surface, a, and an inner 5o plated surface, l), and which may be drawn up from rolled plate sheet metal, as usual in the manufacture of jewelry.
In forming my improved ornamental ring from the plated seamless tube A, I first remove a portion of the exterior of the tube at each end, so as to form the thinned portions or annular flanges c c, and then turn over the said thinned portions or flanges outwardly and back by means of suitable dies until the plating of the flange c strikes against the o plated outer surface of the tube A, thus forming a jointless ring having a practically continuous plated surface with the thickened edges d d, as shown in Fig. 3, which edges may be reduced to angular form, as shown in Fig. 4, by the process of rolling or otherwise.
The seamless tube A may be formed of two or more concentric tubes, as shown in Fig. 5, in which the outer tube, A', may represent a seamless tube having an outer plated surface, 7o a, and the inner tube, A", a seamless tube having an inner plated surface, b, with an intermediate base-metal tube, A" 5 and in this case the end portions of the tubes A and A may be cut away either for the whole or a part of their thickness to form the thinned ends of flanges for turning outwardly and back, as described.
I claim as my inventionl. A jointless ring having plated inner and 8o outer surfaces, and having thickened edges formed by an outwardly-turned thinned portion or flange, which carries the inner plating outwardly and back against the surface of the outer plating over the edge of the ring and conceals the base metal, substantially as described.
A 2. A jointless ring having plated inner and outer surfaces and having angular thickened edges formed by an outwardly-turned thinned 9o portion or flange, which carries the inner plating outwardly and back against the surface of the outer plating over the edge of the ring and conceals the base metal, substantially as described.
GEORGE H. KNIGHT.
