UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORATIO IV. SOUTlIl/VORTH, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
STATION ERY- PACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,785, dated May 21, 1889.
- Application filed January 14, 1889. Serial No. 296,273. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HORATIO W. SOUTH- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of I-Iampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stationery: Packets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improx'ed stationerypacket to com prise writing-paper and envelopes, the purpose of which is to provide means for retaining and protecting the paper and envelopes, for serving as a writing-pad, and permitting the easy withdrawal of a sheet of paper or envelope. as occasion requires, all as will be apparent from the description hereinafter given, and on an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the stationery-packet, it being in its most distended position to permit the use of the paper and for enabling the withdrawal of an envelope, the relative position of the parts when in disuse being indicated in dotted lines, and Fig. 2 is a section of the packet when its parts are in their positions of disuse, taken on the line m 00, Fig. 1. v
The features of novelty in this invention comprise a back board, A, of card or other rigid or semi-rigid material, on which a pad or plurality of sheets of writing-paper, (a, are or may be secured for retention, and yet to permit of easy detachment, one by one, said back having an extension, 0, at one end beyond the border of said pad, and formed in itself or supporting as one therewith an inclosing-case, B, for envelopes b.
The superposed sheets of writing-paper, a, are to be held together and upon the back in the well-known manner of securing sheets in pad form, as by a thin film of gelatinous material or paper secured at one or more of the edges of the paper sheets, and the portion of the back extended beyond the end of said pad is of itself formed into or has formed thereon the pouch or casing B, the open edge of which lies toward the end of the pad, separated therefrom a slight distancesay equal to the normal thickness of the pad added to that of the envelope-casing-so that when the packet is not in use the back may be bent twice to place the casing, with its mouth closed by the intermediate portion, 711, of the back, between the end of the pad and the mouth of the casing, as seen in Fig. 2, folding creases or lines being made in the back at d f. A thumb-opening, g, is formed in one wall of the casing at its mouth for facilitating the withdrawal of envelopes.
The paper-supporting backs, with extensions carrying envelope-cases, as described, when expensively and elaborately made, as sometimes desirable, may have the supply of paper and envelopes replenished when required; but it is the main purpose of the invention to provide an inexpensive packet comprising uniform quantities of paper and envelopes therefor, the supporting and inclosing parts to be thrown away when the stationery has been used.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. Supporting and inclosing devices for writing-paper and envelopes, consisting of a back of rigid or semi-rigid material to constitute the base of a pad of writing-paper provided with an extension, 0, carrying a case for envelopes having an open end which lies toward and a short distance from the line of the end of the pad, the portion of said extension between the open end of the case and the said end line of the pad being creased, as described, whereby said extension-back may be folded to present the case upon the top of the pad, with its open end closed by said intermediate portion of the extension, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a stationery-packet, the combination, with a back, A, having an extension, 0, the interm ediate portion, on, of which being adapted to be bent in folding-lines d f, and the case B, formed on said extension, with its closed end coincident with the end of said extension and its open end with the folding-line m, of a pad of writing-paper on said back proper, with its one end coincident with the folding-line (l of the said extension, substantially as and for the purpose described.
IIORATIO IV. SOUTI'DVORTII.
