Description
(No Model.)
0., H. ROSENT'HAL. TOOL FOR REMOVING SHELL GROWNS FROM TEETH.
Patented May 14, 1889.
I fiwenim":
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES HENRY ROSENTHAL, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- THIRD TO LOUIS XV. VVYLER.
TOOL FOR REMOVING SHELL-CROWNS FROM TEETH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,293, dated May 14, 1889.
7 Application filed March 18, 1889. Serial No. 303,668. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beitknown that I, CHARLES HENRY RosEN- THAL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Removing Shell-Crowns from Teeth, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which- Figure 1. is my invention. Fig. 2 is a ver tioal section through the center of all the parts, enlarged, with the top of the handle broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail of the clamp. Fig. 4 is a detail of the elongated nut, having a flange on the lower edge. Fig. 5 is a shellcrown, which I do not claim as part of my invention, but show it for illustration.
Similar letters of reference throughout the several figures denote the same parts.
In the drawings, H is the handle, having on one end a screw-threaded shaft, S, adapted to work in the elongated screw-threaded nut N, having a flange on its lower end.
C is the clamp, having a hole in the center of its top adapted to fit loosely about the nut N and having its sides bent at right angles to the top and the lower end of the sides bent in at right angles to the same to form flanges, as seen at 0, adapted to fit under and engage with the lower edge of a shell-crown, O, having a hole in the center of its top adapted to allow the end of the screw-threaded shaft S to pass through on either side of a tooth.
Operation: I operate myinvention by passing the screw-threaded nut 'N through the hole in the top of the clamp C, pass the screwthreaded shaft S through the nut N until the end of the shaft S is passed through the hole in the top of the shell-crown 0 and rests upon the tooth, the sides of the clamp C having been passed down the sides of the shellcrown 0 until the flange 0 springs into place under the edges of theshell-crown and on either side of the tooth. By turning the handle H the nut N passes through the hole in clamp C, (about which said clamp is loosely journaled,) till the flange on the nut N comes in contact with the clamp C, and by continuing to turn the handle H the nut N, pressing against the the clamp C 011 the nut N for the purpose of enabling the operator to change the handle from a perpendicular to almost any angle, and pressure can be had on a tooth in any part of the mouth. In the drawings I show a handle of the ordinary tools of dentists; but, if necessary, the handle can be short and perforated, having holes cut at right angles adapted to receive a lever for the purpose of turning the shaft S in the nut N, or the shaft S can be at taohed to a flexible shaft and turned in that manner, so that a shell-crown can be readily removed from any part of the mouth.
- I only show one form of constructing the clamp C; but when necessary fordifferentshaped teeth I change the form of the lower part of the clamp to conform to the shape of the tooth, or I make the lower end of the clamp pointed with the flanges, as occasion may require.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, is-
In a device for removing shell-crowns from teeth, the elongated internal screw-threaded nut N, adapted to receive a screw-thread shaft, S, in combination with the clamp C, loosely journaled on the nut N, having the flanges c, substantially as shown and described.
The foregoing specification of my invention signed by me this 9th day of March, A. D. 1889.
CHARLES HENRY ROSENTHAL.
