CHl MNEY-COWL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,365, dated April 30, 1889.
V Application fiIedMay IZ, 1888. Serial No. 273,714- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC JACKSON TURNER,
of Princeton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Chimney-Cowl, of which the follow-' in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 isa sectional elevation of my new Fig. 2 is a plan View of thesame. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation showing a modification. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the same.
A represents the flue through which the ascending smoke and products of combustion pass from the chimney to the open air. This is, by preference, made square, and in it is secured the truncated cone or pyramid B, above which is held the cover or guard 0, having side walls, 0, so that the ascending smoke will be deflected downward, as indicated by arrows 1, and so, also, that any downdraft of external air striking the outer surfaces of the walls 0 will be deflected into the space D between the cone B and the outerflange, E. This outer flange or casing E serves as a guard to prevent Wind from blowing directly over the top of the cone B.
In 'the form of cowl shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the flange reaches to a level with the top of the cover. or guard O, and at the angles formed by the flange E and cone or pyramid B are formed the openings at d, for the escape of the downdraft, and over these openings are hinged the doors (1', which prevent the wind from blowing in, but do not impede the exhaust or escape of the downdraft.
In the form of cowl shown in Figs. 1 and 2 I employ an intermediate guard, F, the upper edge of which reaches to a level with the top of the cover 0 and lower edge reaches below the top of the flange E. To the upper edge of the guard F, I hinge the doors d, which rest normally upon the upper edge of the flange E, and prevent Wind from blowing down between the wall F and flange E. The
downdraft that enters the guard F follows the direction of the arrows 2 and leaves by the doors d,:and escapes from the cowl without in any manner impeding the draft of the chimney.
The guard F may be supported by straps orbraces f f extending, respectively, from the inside of the guard to the cone B and from the outside of the guard to the casing E.
By providing a number of doors at different points of the compass, and using the inclined sides of the cone or deflector B to deflect the downdraft to the proper door or doors, I obtain excellent results. The use of the open flue A and the protecting cover or cap 0 in connection with the doors is also important, since it affords a proper and ample means of exit for the products of combustion, and yet if wind should get under the cover C it could pass across the top of the flue and be deflected downwardly on the other side of the inclined edges 0 of the cover.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l v 1. In a chimney-cowl, the combination, with a number of outwardly-swinging doors for the escape of downdrafts located on the cowl at different points of the compass, of a deflector arranged within the cowl for directing the downdrafts to the doors, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a chimney-cowl, the open flue or body A, arranged centrally therein, the cover 0, the casing or flange E, and the outwardly-swingingdoors for the escape of downdrafts.
3. The combination of the flue or body A, having a contracted top, the cover 0, placed over and in close proximity to the flue or body A, the outer flange or casing extending around the mouth of the flue or body A, and the hinged doors d, substantially as set forth.
4. The pyramidal or contracted flue or body A, having the cover 0, in combination with the flange or casing E, intermediate plate, F, and doors d, hinged to the top of the plate F, substantially as described.
ISAAC JACKSON TURNER.
