WIRE STRETCHER AND HOLDER.

Be it known that I, JOHN TV. DAVY, of Kin gston, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in W'i re Stretchers and Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it-appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompa-nying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form partof this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in \vire-streiichers and holding-clips.

The object of my invention to provide a combined wire fastening or holding clip and wire'stretcher which shall form a part of the fence and hold and support thewires, and whereby the wires can be tightened or slackened at will or detached to form an opening through the fence to allow for the passage of vehicles or the like, and then can bereadily readjusted in a very short space of time and with very little trtmblc.

With these ends in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and eombimitions of parts, more f ttlly de scribed hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fence-post and wires held and fastened to the post by means of the combined holding-clip and wirestret'cher. 'l i 2 is a plan view of the holder, and Fig. I} isa vertical cross-section of the same.

In the drawings, the rel'erenee-letter A indicates the holdingclip and stretcher, which is composed of a metallic block or body portion, j)lfl;ll)l rectangular in shape, and

one bolt beingloeated on each side of the clip and extending beyond the edges of the Same. Each rod or bolt is provided at one end with an eye, slot, or head, D, to which a wire is secured, and at its opposite end or portion is screw-threaded, as shown at l). A nut, E, or the like is located on said screw-threaded portion, and is adapted to bear against one of the arms or flanges earryin g its respective rod, whereby the rod is held in position and is longitudinally adjusted and rendered removable. The eyes or heads 1) of the two longitudt nally-adjustaliile rods carried by each clip are located atopposite ends of the clip, so that the end of the wire on one side of the post can he secured to oneeye and the wire end on the opposite side of the post can be socured to the other.

In constructing wire fences the herein-described wire holders and tighteners are placed on every, say, seventh or eighth post, the

ends of the wires extending in one direction being secured to the eyes of: the rods on that side of the post, and the ends of the wires extending from the opposite direction being secured to the eyes located on their side of the post and belonging to the rods or bolts on the opposite side of the clips from that upon which the liefore-mentioned rods are located. The wires attached to the eyes of the rods are strained up to the proper tension by turning the nuts on the screw-threaded ends of the rods by means of a wrench or the like, first; screwing up the rods on one side of the post and then those on the other. The central opening or mortise through which the post extends is tin'et'erably formed son'tewhatlarger than the post, so as to slip loosely upon the same, and when adjusted to the proper position on the post it is secured to the same by a wedge, F, or like device, driven in between the end of the slot or opening and the edge of the post, thereby clamping it firmly to the same.

The extreme simplicity and cheapness of the hercin-deseribcd device, which combines in one article a wire holding and fastening clip and a wire tightener and stretcher, will recotn mend it to all versed in the art and to all persons desiring a wire fence of tasteful appearance and great strength. The article is also exceedingly durable and quickly manipulated and adjusted, and of great strength, rendering it of great usefulness and advantage for use with all wire or similar fences.

It is evident that the flanges or arms through which the rods extend can be dispensed with and the rods located in horizontal apertures formed directly in the body portion of the clip; but I prefer to use the arms or flanges described, as the article is thereby rendered lighter in weight and of sufficient strength for the purpose; and, if desired, the arms or flanges can be connected on each side by the horizontal flanges or webs 7), extending laterally from each top side of the clip over the top edges of the vertical arms carrying the rods, and with their outer edges flush, or nearly so, with the outer yertical edges of said arms. It is also obvious that various slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the precise construction herein set forth, but eonsidermyselt entitled to all such slight clnimges as fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

hat I claim is- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a wire holding clip and tightener adapted to form a part of the fence and consisting, essentially, of a body portion to be secured to a post, and one or more longitudinally-adjustable rods carried by the body to which the wires are secured, and by which they are fastened to the post and are stretched, substantially as set forth;

2. The herein-described wire holder and stretcher, consisting of a body portion provided with a central slot or opening adapted to receive or slip over a post, and one or more longitudinally-adjustable rods or bolts, each provided with an eye to which the Wires are secured, as set forth.

3. The combination, with the body portion provided with a central slot or aperture and with laterally-extem'ling arms'or flanges on each side, of the rods extending through said flanges, one rod being located on each side of the body portion, and each providedwith an eye and screw-threaded portion, substantially as described.

4. The combination, with a post, of the hereinalescribed wire fastener and stretcher, consisting of a clip or body portion provided with a central slot to embrace or slip upon a post, a pair of longitudinally-adjustable rods to which the wires are secured, and a Wedge or pin, whereby the body portion is clamped to the post, as set forth.
