WATCH-CASE PENDANT.
SPECFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 398,95*?, dated March 5, 1889.

Be it known that 1, FRANK GEORGE FAXON,
of Mount Morris, in the county of. Livingston and State of N ew York, have invented a new and lmproved Pendant-Set, of which the following' is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming' a part thereof, in which- Figure l is a vertical transverse section of a watch-pendant to which my improvement has been applied, showing the parts in position for drawing out the winding' and setting' stem, the section being' taken on line ai in Fig. 4,-. Fig. i? is a vertical transverse section, also taken on the line .1' a? in Fig'. l, showing the winding and setting' stem partly withdrawn from the pendant. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the stem-holding springs. Fig. 4. is a transverse section taken on line y y in Fig'. l; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the watch-bow, showing' the end received in the pendant.

The object of my invention is to construct a pendant-set in which the watch-bow will retain the winding' and set-ting stem within the pendant when in its normal position, but which will release the stem-holding springs when the said bow is in a particular position.
My invention consists in the combination, with a pendant made in separable parts, of a bow having conical recessed ends received in bearings formed `in the parts of the pendant and springs arranged to engage the winding and setting stem and adapted to be locked by the ends of the bow, all as hereinafter more fully described.
To the watch-rim A is fitted the pendant B, formed of tour parts, the main portion o, screwed into the rim A, the sleeve 7), screwed into the part o, the ri n g' c, placed loosely on the sleeve Z), and the nut d, screwed on the outer end of the sleeve h and clamping the ringe. The part d of the pendant is bored to receive the winding and setting stem C, and is provided with a shoulder, e, upon which rests the annular portion f of the double spring' D. The
annular portion f of the said spring supports the spring-arms g, which are provided at their free ends with heads 71. The sleeve 7) is provided with longitudinal slots iy in diametrically-opposite sides for receiving the springarms g. The ring c, which is iittcd to the outer end of the sleeve b, is preferably made of the same diameter as the upper end of the part o, and in the upper surface ot" the ring is formed a conical recess, to which is fitted the conical nut (7, which holds the ring in position upon the sleeve 7;. Both the nut and sleeve are provided with nicks tor receiving' a screw-driver.
The bow E is provided with enlarged conical ends, which are received in the conical bearings j of the pendant l. rThe `faces of the adjoining ends ot the bow E are parallel, and in the said faces are i'ornied recesses 7;, of sutlicient size to receive the ends ot' the heads 71 of the springs D when the said springs are thrown forward by the longitudinal movement of the winding and setting stem C. The stem C is reduced in diameter in two places, leaving the collar 7, the said collar being' provided with beveled faces to facilitate its passage between the ends ot' the double spring D. The outer en d of the winding and setting' stem C is provided with the usual crown, F, and the inner end is squared t'or engagement with the winding' and setting' mechanism. The stem C is provided with the collar ym tor limiting its outward movement.
rl`he collar 7 of the stem C is engaged by the heads 7L ot the spring-arms (j, thereby preventing' the drawing out of the said stem; but when the bow F is turned so as to cause the recesses 7; in the ends of the bow to coincide in position with the heads 7l of the spring the stem C may be drawn out tor the purpose ot setting' the watch, the beveled t'aces oit' the collar 7 pressing the arms g of the double spring D outward, as shown in Fig'. 2, the heads 7i being partly received in the recesses 7.'.
My improvement prevents the accidental drawing' out ot the stem C and permits of the use of light springs for retaining the stem iu either ot' its positions, so that when the bow i E is in a certain position the said stem may be readily drawn out or pushed in.
lt is obvious that single arm, g, of the jspring D will serve to hold the stem C in y either ot' its positions, aud that in such a case l only one end of the bow E would need to be i recessed. lt is also obvious that by omitting 1 the groov-e below the collar .7 the spring-arms IOO g will be compelled to remain in an expanded position so long as the said stem is pulled out. This will lock the bow E, so that it cannot be turned until the stem is returned to its normal position. This modiiication is important in hunting-case Watches, in which case the bow is made to fold down over the bezel before the stem C can be pulled ont, thus making it impossible to close the Watch Without irst releasing the-stein C and pushing it in. For this reason l do not limit or confine my invention to the exact form shown.
My improvement renders it possible to remove the Winding-stem C from the pendant after taking out the sleeve b and spring D.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as neT and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a pendant-set for watches, the combination, with the Winding and setting` stem, of one or more springs arranged to hold the stem in position for setting or Winding the Watch and a lock for holding the said spring or springs in engagement with the winding and setting stem, substantially as speciied.
2. In a pendant-set, the combination of the Winding and setting stem C, provided with the collar Z, the spring D, having the arms g, provided with heads h, and the boW E, having recesses 7e in the ends thereof, substantially as specied.
3. In a Watch-pendant, the combination of. the main part a, provided With the shoulder e, the ring c, the sleeve l), nut d, and the bow E, substantially as specified.
4. In a pendant-set, the combination of the part o, provided with the shoulder e, the slotted sleeve Z), the ring c, nut the spring D, the bow E, having conical ends journaled in the part a and ring c and provided with reeesses 7f3, and the stem C, having the collar l, substantially as specified.
