EL'WYN A. )IALLORY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
ADJUSTABLE HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,636, dated February 26, 1889.
Application filed October 29, 1888 improvement is to provide a hinge which is adjustable in two directions, so as to give each hinge on a door, &c., an equal amount of strain and bearing, and also to adjust the swingingpart so as to fit exactly the opening or place to be closed. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the aceom- Figure 1 is a section through my improved hinge. Fig. 2 shows a top view of it, and Fig. 3 shows the application of. my hinge to an iron shutter.
Similar letters re fer to similar parts thronghout the several views.
Myhinge is the reverse of the general type, as the hinge-loop is secured to the frame and the hinge-pivot fastened to the swinging part. 1
The hinge-leaf (I is formed at its inner end 5 with a cylindrical screw-threaded stem, 7:, i which is designed to be screwed axially into 1 one end of a cylindrical body, b, which is bored and screw-threaded to r this purpose, said bore being enlarged at its inner end, so as to allow ancasier tapping. The head of the body 1), comprising the lugs m n, is bored and screwthreaded transversely thereof, and the screwthreaded stem 6 of the pivot-bolt or pintlef screwed into it, said stem being left blank on its root, so as not to weaken it in its vital part, 1
Serial No. 289,365 (No model.)
is turned smooth and fits into the enlarged lower part of the hole. Integral with the pintle f is the collar d, forming a shoulder for the hinge-loop g, and, being hexagon-shaped 011 its upper part, allows an easy turning of said pintle. A look-nut, 0, bearing against the lug m, is designed to hold the pivot-bolt in its vertical adjustment and keep it from turning by the moving door. The pintle is turned smooth and tits and turnsin thehingeloop g, which is fastened to the door-frame, and can be made to suit the various purposes.
It is obvious that the construction can be modified in making either the hinge-pivotintegral with the body I) or the body 11 solid with the l-iinge-leaf a, which will make the hinge I adjustable in only one direction.
llavin thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is e In a hinge, the combination of the leaf (1, having a cylindrical screwthreaded end, 72,
t a cylindrical body, I), provided with a screwthreaded longitudinal bore to receive the screw-threaded end of the leaf, and provided also on its inner end with a head comprising the lugs m it, said head having a screwthreaded bore transversely thereof, a pivotbolt, f, having a screwthreaded stem, 6, designed to be screwed into the head of body Z), a collar, (1, integral with the pintle, a lock-nut, c, and a hinge-loop, g, all substantially as described.
