Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
C. E. STOCKDER, OF WEST MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
MPROVEMENT 1N BRIDLE-BITS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 39,843, dated September 8, 1863.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, C. E. STOCKDER, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bridle-Bits; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanyi-ng drawings, forming a part ot' this specication, in which- Figure l represents a pla-n or top view of my bridle-bit when the same is stretched out and laid down tlat. Fig. 2 is a `longitudinal vertical section ot' one ot' the rings, showing the application ot' the stra-p.
Similar lettersof reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
This invention' consists in the arrangement ot' an eye and tongue in the bit-ring in such a manner that the end of the rein can be fastened directly in the bit-ring itself', thus avoiding the necessity of doubling up the strap and without the application ot' an extra. buckle and martingalestop, whereby the manufacture of the rein is rendered much cheaper than that of ordinary reins; and, furthermore, by the use of my bit-rings the Ieins are made of a uniform thickness throughout, and therefore not liable to crook and break.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it. t
A A represent the bit-rings, which are made of malleable iron or any other suitable material, and which are connected by the bit B in the ordinary manner. Each of the rings V A is provided with a tongue, ct, and eye b, to receive one of the ends ot" the rein C. These ends are provided with. a series of holes, c, so that they can be shortened or lengthened at pleasure, and that they can be secured to the bit-strings without the aid of an additional buckle. The rein can thus be made of one uniform thickness throughout, and by dispensing with the extra buckle the martingalestop can also be dispensed with, there being no place in my rein in which the martingalering might possibly catch.
In an ordinary rein at that place where the martingale-stop is applied three thicknesses ot' leather are secured-one on the top of the otherand the strap is liable to break on account ot this inequality in its thickness, that portion ofthe strap close behind the thickest part acting like a joint which works continually backward and forward.
By my improvement I am enable to make the billet and rein all out ot' one piece, and if the rein is to be round only the ends of the strap are left flat to enter the eyes in the bitrings. The cost ot' man uf'acturin,f a rein is thereby considerable reduced, and an article of superior durability is produced.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i s- As a new article ot' manufacture, a bit-ring, A, provided with a tongue, a, and eye b, as and for the purpose specified.
C. E. STOCKDER.
