GEORGE W. HUGKABAY, OF GARFIELD, LOUISIANA.
CAN E-MILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,401, dated February 26, 1889.
Application filed September 12, 1888 Serial No. 285,207, (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HUOKABAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Garfield, in the parish of Oaddo and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cane-Mills, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of mills in which a yielding pressureis given to one of the rollers toprovide for the passage of cane of different thickness; and it has for its objects to provide a new and improved combination of devices for effecting this object, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is herein had to the accom anying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of a construction embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a partial sectional side elevation, and Fi is a section on the line a: to of Fig. 2.
A base-block, A, is provided with two openings, A A for the reception of roller-journals, the upper side of said block being provided with a groove, A, extending from one end of the block to the opening A A top block, 13, is constructed substantially the same as the block A-that is to say, the block B is provided with two openings, B, B and also provided with a groove, B, on its upper side, extending from one end of the block to the opening B The blocks A B are connected at one end by a block, a, and connected at the opposite end by an H-shaped block, I). A roller, 0, is provided with journals C, said journals being engaged in the openings A 3'. A sliding block, G, is mounted in the groove 13", and a sliding block, II, is mounted in the groove A. The inner ends of each block G ll is recessed, so as to fit the journals D of the roller D. A rabbeted movable block, I, lies partly outside of and partly between the blocks G H, the latter blocks, G H, lying in the rabbeted parts of the block I aforesaid.
J a lever :fulcrumed at J in the recess J 2 of the block D. K is also a lever fulcrunied at Ii in the recess K of said block. The
lever J is provided with a series of notches,
J, on its upper side, and the lever K is provided on its under side with a series of notches, K. A bar, L, is provided 011 its up per side, near its inner end, with a notch, L, also provided on its upper outer side with a series of notches, L and the under side of said bar, near its inner end, is provided with a series of notches, L. A link, M, engages the notches J 4 and L in the lever J and bar L, respectively, and a link, N, engages the notch L in the bar L and the notches II in the lever K.
O is a weight provided with a link or hook, P, said hook being engaged with one of the notches L in the outer upper side of the bar L.
The operation of my invention is as follows: hen the parts are in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the bar L and levers J K are connected by the links M N, and the said parts J K L M N form a compound lever. The weight 0, with its link P, draws down on the outer end of'the bar L, causing the link M to force down the outer end of the lever J, the link N forcing up the outer end of the lever K. This action causes the inner ends of the lovers J K to press against the outer side of the movable block I, and thereby force the blocks G 1-1 inward, so as to press the inner ends of said blocks G II against the journals D, thereby forcing the roller D nearer the companion roller (1. Any desired )ressure may be brought to bear against the journals D by adjusting the weight 0 and its link on the bar L. Of course this weight can be increased or diminished to suit the character of work to be performed. A further adjustment of the lovers maybe effected by means of the links M N and lever-notchcs.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United, States l. The combination, with the grooved blocks A B, connect-ed at one end by a block, a, and at the other end by an H-shaped block, b, of the rollers C D, one having its journal adjustably located in its bearings, the sliding blocks G H, the rabbeted block 1, bearingagainst the outer ends thereof, the cam-levers J K, bearing against the block I and fulcrumed to the block b, and the weighted lever L, con- N, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 10th day of to September, A. D. 1888.
2. The combination, with the sliding block 7 1 VT T 7 I, the blocks G ll, and shaft; D, of the notched hORGE CRABAY' cam-levers J K and notched lever L, and the \Vibnesses: links M N, connecting said notched levers, J. P. SCOTT,
wbst-antially as specified. FRANK A. FOUTS.
