SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,783, dated February 12, 1889.

Application filed April 21, 1888. Serial No. 271,449. (No model.) Patented in England June 17, 1887, No. 8,720, and in France May 9, 1888, No. 190,509.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE \VILLIAM BEN- JAMIN OREEs, engineer, of Wingfield, in the county of \Vilts, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hachines for IVashing Plates, Dishes, and other Similar Articles, (for which Letters Patent were granted to me heretofore by the governments of Great Britain, No. 8,7 20 of 1887, dated June 17, and of France, No. 190,509, dated May 9, 1888,) of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in machinery for wz-tshing plates, dishes, and similar articles.

In describing my invention I refer to the accompanying drawf 113s on Sheets 1 to 4, and to the figures and letters of reference thereon.

On Sheet 1 Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my apparatus. 011 Sheet 2 Fig. 2 represents an elevation of the same on the reverse side. On Sheet 3 Fig. 3 represents a central longitudinal section of the apparatus. 011 Sheet 4 Fig. 4 represents a central vertical transverse section of the machine.

I provide a suitable box or receptacle, A, to hold water or liquid, either hot or cold, and the supply and discharge of this might be continuous, it passing through the box or r ceptacle, if deemed desirable. In the box or receptacle A, I mount brushes B B on suit able spindles running in stuffing-boxes O O, fixed on the sides of the box or receptacle A. These spindles carry spur-wheels D D, gearing one into the other, whereby the brushes rotate in opposite directions. On the spindle of D, I mount a pinion, E, rigidly keyed thereto, and which gears into a spur-wheel, F, mounted on the driving-shaft G of the machine, which may be driven by hand, treadle, or from a suitable motor. As shown, a flywheel is fitted on the shaft for handle or treadle operation.

The shaft G carries on. the opposite side of the box or receptacle a pinion, H, gearing with an idle-pinion, I, which drives a large spur-wheel, J, for the purpose hereinafter described.

In the box or receptacle A, I provide guides-such as K Lsuitably fixed to the box or receptacle, as by brackets M N, secured to the same. The guides K L extend downward and between the brushes, as shown.

The box A is provided on opposite sides with vertical guides P Q, as shown in Fig. 4.. A dish-carrying frame, 0, reciprocates between the guides K L and P Q. A rod, R, connects this frame with a cross-head, S,which slides Vertically on an upright standard, T, attached to the box A. On the outer end of the cross-head S is pivoted a link, U, connected by pivoted joint to crank V, carried from spur-wheelJ. By the revolutions of this wheel the cross-head rises and falls on the fixed rod or standard T, so working the frame O up and down. An oscillatory lever, X, is pivoted at Y to the lower end of the box, and extends upward at one side thereof to a point above the top of the box. This lever is provided at its upper end with a plate, Z, and at its lower bent end with a weight, which tends to-swing the lever into contact with the cam-arm IV on the crank V. This cam-arm W serves to push out the lever as the cam is rotated. The lever X carries a pin, a,running in a segmental slot, 1), suitably affixed to the machine. 0 is a fixed guide-plate for use in feeding the plates, dishes, or similar articles into the machine. Both plate Z and fixed guide-plate 0 may be padded with rubber or other soft or elastic material, if required.

The frame 0, before mentioned, is clearly shown in Fi 3 and 4., and is carried to a convenient distance across and down into the box or receptacle A, and will. consequently rise and descend therein, and is so placed that it does not interfere with the action of the rotating brushes while in motion. Arms f project upward from the lower bar, g, of the dish-carrying frame O, and serve to support the dish at their upper ends while being washed.

In working the machine the action is as follows: The plate, dish, or similar article to be cleansed is placed on the fixed guide-plate c and the machine started. The plate Z then retreats, owing to the curved arm or cam end i l i l with it on the arms or pru 'ieetiens ff the plate,

It can then he lifted out and dried, as usual. Another plate, dish, or similar article is then placed against the fixed guidedate c and the moving plate Z, which, retreating, allows the artiele t0 descend between the brushes in he 1 raised and delivered.
