Be it known that I, THOR A. THORSEN, a subject ofthe King of Norway, residing` at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in l-Iand Planing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The more prominent ob jects of. my invention are to provide a simple, compact, and etticient construction of hand planing-machine which can be readily carried from place to place within a workshop and applied at will either to a vise or to any ordinary bench, but more particularly to the former, and when so applied worked by hand, whereby the entire machine may serve as a comparatively small tool or device having a greater range ot' utility and capable of various uses not incident to planing-machines as constructed prior to my invention.
Further objects are to adapt the machine to a great variety of work, and to provide certain novel and improved details, all serving to increase the general utility and efficiency of the machine.
In a hand planing-1nachine characterized by my invention the main frame or stationary body portion of the machine is adapted for application to a vise, andthe reciprocating carriage whereon a suitable toolsholder is supported is arranged so that the tool can be placed in position to act upon such work as may be placed within a vise, whereof the movable jaw preferably serves as one of the work-holding jaws, while the stationary jaw or stationary body of the vise, which is provided with the stationary jaw, serves as a holder to which the body of the hand planing-machine can be rigidly attached. A horizontal guideway for the carriage is supported upon the body portion of the machine, and the said carriage is provided with an adj ustable slide to which the tool-holder is attached. The carriage is conveniently operated by a hand-lever, and at each back-stroke on the part of the carriage the slide is adjusted to a proper extent by an automatically-operating feed device. In order to permit the tool to work within a more extended field and from different standpoints, the guide for the carriage is pivotally attached to the body portion of theniachine and extended out therefrom, whereby it may, when desired, be swung around so that the direction of reciprocation of the carriage can be changed to any desired extent. The body portion of the niachine is also provided with a laterally-arranged work-holding bracket which may upon certain occasions be employed for holding` certain kinds of work, and, it desired, the said body portion of the machine can'be removed from the vise and applied. to an ordinary work-bench.
Certain details ot' construction are herein particularly described in connection with the accompanying' drawings, in whicl1- Figure l represents in perspective a hand planing-machine embodying the principles ot' my invention and applied to a vise. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same with the jaws t of the work-holding bracket I omitted for convenience ot' illustration. Fig. 3 represen ts a vertical section taken transversely through Fig. 2 on the line 3 3, the vise handle and screw being, however, shown in. elevation. In said drawings, A represents the main frame or the body of the machine, and B denotes a block or plate, which is arranged upon the body A and adapted to serve as a guide for reciprocating slide of carriage C. To such end the tool-hohler is attached to a slide, E, which latter is in turn supported upon the carriage C and arranged so that it can be adjusted by a 'feed-screw, c, in a direction transverselyto the lineot' reciprocation of the carriage. As a simple construction the carriage C may consist of an oblong plate, Figs. l and 7, provided along its bottom side with a longitudinally-arral'iged dovclail channel, c, and provided across its top side with a dovetail channel, c', whereby the guide B may [it the bottom channel, c, so as to propcrl y vguide and steady the carriage, while on the other hand a rib, e', on the under side otl the slide E may tit the top channel, c, of the carriage, so as to steady a-nd direct said slide in its adjustment.

The cam or incline c5 causes an upward swing on the part of the pawl-carrying arm, so that the pawl may positively engage the ratchet, and hence operate the same. As a means for supporting said cam or incline, it can be adj ustably attached by a setscrew or screw and thumb-nut, e, Fig. 5, to a bracket, l), which latter is conveniently formed by a bent plate or bar having its ends secured to the under side of the guide-plate B, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. It will be observed that the guide-plate B fits within a groove, c, in the under side of the carriage C, and that the bottom side of such portion of theguide-plate B as extends beyond the body A of the machine is exposed, whereby the bracket b can be attached to the under side ot the plate B, as aforesaid. The bracketl) also provides a convenient support for the Afulcrum f of a hand lever, F, which is operated to reciprocate the carriage. The main .trame or body A ol' the machine is ad aptcd to be placed and held with in a vise, to which end it is formed with an open bottom and otherwise suit-ably adapted to iit upon or receive one of the jaws of a vise, as best shown in Fig. 3, wherein the body A of the machine is shown placed over the stationary j aw y of a vise, G. The opening' a in the top ot said body serves to receive the upper portion ot the vise-jaw (j and permits the machine to be set sufficiently low down with reii erence to the work, which, for example, may be clamped between the movable jaw g of the vise and one of the outer vertical sides of the body A ot' the machine, as in Figs. l, 2, and 3, wherein a piece of work is shown clamped between the body A and one of the visejaws. In connection wit-h such arrangement a gage, 71, can bc ad justably attached to the body A of the machine.
The body A is provided with one or more screws, a9, whereby it can be held rigid with the stationary jaw or stationary body of the vise, so that the machine will retain its properY place when the movable jaw of the viseis adj usted for the purpose of putt-ing in or taking out work. The said body A is at what may be termed its front side provided with one or more, butpreferablyacouple, of set-screws, a3, which, for example, can be adjusted so as to vary the angle at which the body can be held relative to a plane parallel with the visejaws or the work adjusted in position, as may be desired.

It will, however, be obvious that both of the jaws t can be used when the bracket is applied asin Fig. lO, and also that either or both of said jaws can be serrated or otherwise adapted with reference to the character of the work that is to be held between them.
Where the machine to be rendered applicable to a bench as well as to a vise, the body A can be itlanged at its base or otherwise adapted to provide bearings for bolts or clamping devices, it being understood,how ever, that such arrangement does not intertere with the removal ol.' the machine from the bench and its applieatitm to a vise.

G. In a hand planing-machine, the combi nation, with thc stationary body and a reciprocating carriage arranged thereon and provided with a tool-holder, of a work-holding bracket, such as set forth, attached to said body, for the purpose described.
