Description
" A. J. RITTER.
Carriage-Seat.
Patented Aug 25. 1863.
, j'nvenfof:
UNITED STATES PATENT 'OFFICEO ANDREW J. RITTER, RAIIWAY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN A.CARRIAGE-SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,677, dated August 25, 1863; antedated June 12, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. RITTER, of Rahway, in the countyr of Union, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Producing an Extra Seat for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full and exact description thereot', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature ot' my invention consists in converting the front part ot' theseat-rail or handle into a movable brace and attaching the movable part of the handle to the tall or seat board in such a manner as to produce an extra seat to vehicles in a moments time.
` To enable others skilled in the art ot' attaching seats to vehicles to make and use my iniproved arrangement for seats, I will describe it in the following` specication and drawings annexed thereto, which form a part of the same, reference being had to the letters and iigures marked thereon.
The same letters ret'er to the same parts in all of the drawings.
Instead of making the rail A in one single piece from the back oi' the seat to the front 0n the rocker H, as is shown on the back seat, E, at A, Fig. l, I make it in two pieces, a A, jointing them at the post B, as shown at F, Figs. 1, 2, and 3. I then take the fall or seat board O and place it in a perpendicular position in front of the seat D, and then, instead ot' fastening the end of the movable rail a to the rocker H, asis ordinarily done, I fasten it to the end of the fall or seat board C, as shown at Fig. 2, the rail a A still keeping its original appearance.
On the back of the fall or seat board C are the folding and supporting legs I I, which are attached to the under side of the fall or seat board C, to keep the seat up when in its horizontal position, the front being trimmed to represent a fall when perpendicular and a cushion when horizontal. Now, when an extra seat'is required, it is only necessary to raise the board C to its horizontal position and drop the legs to their proper place. By thisl opera-tion the movable part of the seat-rail is converted into a firm brace, and the fall-board into a substantial seat, as is shown at Fig. 3. When the seat is to be dispensed with, fold up the legs I I. Let it drop to its proper place iu front of seat D by its own gravity,.where it is always ready for use, as shown at Figs. l and 2.
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. Dividing and jointing the seat-railAand converting the front part of the seat-rail A into a movable brace, for the purpose of s up-` porting and workin g the seat-board. C, as hereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination of the movable front rail A with the i'all or seat board G, and the supporting-legs I I, attached to the under side of the fall or seat board C, as and for the purpose herein set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I do hereby subscribe my name this the 29th day of March, 1861.
GILBERT G. RITTER, IsAAo S. MILLER.
