SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,133, dated January 15, 1889.

Be it known that I, VILLIAM B. ZERR, a citizen of the United States, residing in Spring township, county of Berks, State of Pennsyl.
vania, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Devices for Cleaning \Vindows, ot' whicph the following is a specification.
This improvement pertains more particularly to the class of window-washers intended to be secured with the rubber in proximity with the glass upon the outside ot the window and to be operated 'from the room on the inside of the window.
The object of the invention is to improve this class of devices and make their operation thoroughly effective.
The drawings accompanying this specification and forming partof the same show very clearly the nature and use of my improvement, like letters of reference indicating like parts throughout- Figure l representing the device in full side elevation, with a portion of a window frame and sash in sectional elevation; Fig. 2, a rear or inner elevation of the same; Fig. S, a front c nd elevation of the device; Fig. 4, a plan looking down upon the same; Fig. 5, representing in side elevation the device with an attachment whereby it is adapted to be used for cleansingl windows of an unusual heightg Fig. 6, an inner end view of the same, showing the continuation of the guides, whereby the movement of the rubber is made continuous; Fig. 7, detailed front and side elevations ot' the cross-head, showing therewith the clamping device for the washing-rubber; Fig. S, a plan and side elevation of the clamping device detached from the cross-head; Fig. 9, a front and side elevation of the post adjustment; Fig. l0, a front and side elevation of the compensating spring-balance for the crosshead. 1
In the drawings, A represents the base; B, a standard at the outer end of the base; C, a clamping-screw adapted to slide in a slot, A', at the inner end of the base and engaging a clamp, C', formed with a projecting lug, C2, to catch under the window-sill upon the inside of the room, and a guide-pin, C3, to keep the body at right angles with the slot.
The vertical post D is pivoted at D to the standard ll, and is provided at its lower end with a centrally-secured eye-piece, E, having a set-screw, E', the eye bored to pass freely over a curved guide, F, struck by a radius i'rom the pivot D to the conter of the same, said guidehaving legs Fand Vt'cct F'f2 by which it is secured te the base.
Guides G extend from ucar the base to within a short distance of the top of the post D, said post being centrally recessed at D2 to permit the cross-head P to traverse the post, said guides (i lappingI over the sides of the recess. Stops Il are placed at the top and bottom of the post within lthis recess, which limits the movement of the cross-head in both vertical directions.
A pulley-mortise, D3, is placed central to the post just at the lower stop H, and has inserted therein an ordinary cord-guide pulley, I, one of the same kind, I', being secured to the side and near the lower end of the post D, a pillar guide-pulley,l2, being secured central to and in the extreme upper end of the post. On the front face a standard, J, is secured upon the edge of the post D and near its upper end7 and supports removably a case, K, containing a spiral flat spring, K', said spring secured at its inner end upon the non-revoluble stud Lcand at its outer end to the periphery of the case, said case adapted to revolve upon said stud, which is secured in said standard by a nut, L.
A cord,.M, passes vfrom the top of the crosshead P to the pillar-pulley I2 and downward to pulley I', then in toward the rear of the base, terminating in a handle, M. A cord, N, also passes from the lower end of the crosshead to and under the pulleyl; then upward to the case K of the compensating spring-balance, is wrapped several times around the periphery of the same, and secured in. place.
A metallic cross-head,P, is made of sufficient length vertically to give it steadiness. The edges P are grooved to slide freely over the guides G. A bracket, P2, projects inward from the cross-head P, and is provided with a clamping-screw, Q, adapted to clamp the window-glass rubber R to the cross-head. An eye, P3, at the top serves as a point of attachment for the cord M, and an ear, P4, with a suspended eye at the lower end, for the attach- IOO nient of the cord N. This arrangement permits ot' the swiv elingl around l' the rubber and its adjustinent to bay-windows and corners of ordinary ones, where the rubber could not reach it' rig idly tixed at right angles with the post.
For the purpose ot' adapting' the device to windows ol' eonsiderable di lli'ilrence in height l provide au extra detachable post, D4, having an enlarged base bilurcated at 1.), adapted to be set into the pockets 'l" ot" the casting T, secured to the top of the post l). As thepressure of ojrierati 11g is altogether downward, there is no other fastening` required. The post fl)4 is provided with a continuation of the guides G, has a pillarpi1lle v. l, permanently secured to its top, and a standard, J, perinanentlY attached to one ot' iis eilg-es and bored to receive the stud L ot' the case l.
To make use ot' the attachment, the pillarpulley l2 is removed troni the post fl) and the compensatingspring; case is reinoved. troni the standard J and transferred to the stand ard J. The post l)4 is then eounecti'fd with the post D by having` its biturmited legs D set in the pockets 'l", as described.
The use ot the device is as follows: 'lhe sash is raised, so as to perinit the niaehine to be placed in position, the base-board being set upon the sill ot' the window, the upper sash drawn down, and the post drawn in toward the sash until the rubber rests against the `e'hnss, in which position the base-board is elainped lo the \\'indo\v-sill, a bloelc ot' the proper height being' interposed between the base and sill to inake the clamp etleciive. As i au additional precaution to give security to the base hooks U may be connected with the base at the sides, adapted to catch under the sill outside olf the Window. These hooks are niade adjustable by a movable right and left, hand thread nut, U. Having secured the base in position, the post D is adjusted on its pivot D bythe set-screw E andeye E and gu i de F. The sashes are then adjusted relative to the sweep of the rubber, and operation ina)v eonnnence. The handle lll is grasped and drawn toward the o] 1crator, when the rubber will rise and the compensating spring-balance li will be wound up. On releasingl the pull the spring will draw down the rubber and the cord M will rewrap itself upon the barrel for a repetition ol' the movement.
