SPLIT PULLEY.
SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,101, dated January 15, 1889. Application filed A ril 28, 1888. Serial No. 272,118. (no model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN J. MCERLAIN, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Split Pulleys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference IO marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in whieh Figure 1 is a face view of my improved split pulley, the eovering-plates being removed. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same '15 partly in section. Figs. 3, at, and 5 are details.
This invention is an improvement in split or sectional pulleys; and it consists in the novel construction of the same, as will be clearly illustrated in the annexed drawings,
and particularly hereinafter described, and
pointed out in the claims appended.
Referring to the drawings by letters, A A designate the similar but opposite hub-sections, which are send-cylindrical in cross-sec- 2 5 tion and are provided with perforated bosses o a at their ends, as shown.
B B are semicircular flanges projecting laterally and radially from sections A. It will be seen that the meeting line of the hub-seetions and their flanges is on an imaginary diametrical line passing through the hub.
C C are channels formed in the upper surface of flanges B B, near to and parallel with the meeting edges thereof.
D D areextensions projecting centrally from the peripheries of flanges B, and E E are channels formed in said extensions and extending to and communicating with channels C (l. The channels E are at right angles to channels C, and are radial to the hub. The concave faces of sections A are provided with longitudinal grooves, in which are seated key-pieces F, hereinafter referred to.
The keys F F are fully described and 5 claimed in my application for band-pulleys, filed March 22, 1888, Serial No. 268,100, and are not herein claimed.
G G are parallel spoke-bars seated in channels O and extending equally on each side of the hub, and to their extremities are secured the rim-sections 'W of the pulley, as shown,
which rim-sections are semicircular and meet on the same line as the hubsections. The faces of the hub-sections next to the channels C are cut away, as shown at g g, to acconnno date bars G.
H II are spokes seated in channels E E, and secured at their outer extremities to the rimsections. 7
I I are plates corresponding to flanges B in contour, but recessed at 'tOVQ/I' the channels E.
J J are small plates fitting over extensions D of the flanges and in the recessest' of plate I. Plates I and J are placed over the channels in the hub, inclosing the bars G and spokes H, and bolts K K, which pass through corresponding openings in the flanges, bars, spokes, and plates, bind the parts securely together.
In securing the pulley on a shaft, the hubsections are first properly placed in position around the shaft and secured together by bolts I. L, passed through the perforations in adjoining lugs a a, as shown, thus bii'iding the hub firmly to the shaft. The outer rim-seetions are drawn together by means of screwthreaded rods H M and nuts m m, which engage the opposite spoke-bars G G on each side of the hub. The spokes H and bars G can be set edgewise to the rotation of the wheel, thereby permitting great strain to be put on rods M M to draw the rim-sections together, and at the same time the bars G will increase the bite of the hub-sections on the shaft. The keys F F assist in centering the hub-sections 011 the shaft and turning the wheel, and by varying their thickness the pulleys can be centered and secured on shafts of different diameters. In mounting the pulley, the inner ends of spokes H are preferably slotted for 0 the passage of bolts K, and these bolts are not tightened until the rim-sections have been properly drawn together. The slots permit the spokes to adjust themselves to the rim, and the bolts K are tin ally tightened after the pulley is properly trued.
Having described my invent-ion, I claim 1. In a split pulley, the combination of the opposite flanged hub-sections with the parallel spoke-bars secured, respectively, to the ICC flanges of the opposite sections, the rim-sections attached, respectively, to said bars, the
spokes ll, and the rods and nuts uniting said spoke-bars on opposite sides of the hub, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The comliii'nation of the opposite hubsections havi n g lateral channeled flanges with the parallel spoke-bars seated in said channels, the rim-sections, the bolts uniting said hub-sections, and the rods and nuts uniting the spoke-bars, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with the hulrsections having channeled flanges and the parallel spoke-bars seated in said channels, of the spokes attached to the flanges and extending at right angles to the spoke-bars, rim-sections attached to said bars and spokes, and the uniting bolts and nuts for the parts, all constructed and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.

The combination of the opposite hubsectionshaving lateral flanges with the spokes and spoke-bars secured to said flanges, the retaining-plates bolted to said flanges over the spokes and bars, the rim-sections, and the securing bolts and rods, all constructed and arranged substantially as specified.
5. The combination of the hub sections having semicircular flanges provided at center with peripheral extensions and channeled, substantially as described, with the parallel spoke-bars, the spokes, the securing-plates, rim-sections, and uniting bolts and rods for the hub-sections and the spoke-bars, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
