CIGAR-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,575, dated December 18, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID BICE JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in cigar and cigarette holders, the object thereof being to provide means for connecting the cigar or cigarette with a mouth-piece having a chamber containing absorbent material which collects the nicotine and prevents it from entering the mouth of the smoker.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a side View, in partial section, of my improved cigar and cigarette holder complete. Fig. 2 is a detail side view of the rubber tube.
Like letters denote like parts in both figures.
In the drawings, A denotes a cigar.
B is the rubber tube, into one end of which the cigar is inserted, said receiving end of the rubber tube being split, as shown, for the purpose above indicated.
C denotes the mouth-piece, constructed in any suitable and desirable fashion, and having a chamber, I). This chamber maybe made in any desired manner. It maybe simply a holloW cavity in the mouth-piece, or it may be made in any other manner. Said chamber D is filled with cotton or sponge, E, or any other suitable absorbent material. The end of the mouth-piece which has the chamber containing the absorbent material is inserted into the end of the rubber tube. Said rubber tube will in this manner connect the cigar or cigarette with the mouth-piece, and hence the smoke from the end of the cigar Will pass through the rubber tube before it reaches the mouth-piece. Thus the nicotine gathered by the smoke from the tobacco will be deposited in the absorbent material with which the chamber of the mouthpiece is filled.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the mouth-piece C, having chamber D, containing absorbent material E, and the rubber tube B, having a split end and adapted to receive in one end the cigar or cigarette and in the other end the mouth-piece, substantially as described.
